Prep Roundup: Carson High girls beat Lovelock

Carson High’s girls basketball team won its second straight game and avenged an embarrassing loss in the process.

The Senators blanked Lovelock, 11-0, in the third quarter en route to a 48-38 victory Saturday afternoon at Morse Burley Gym.

A year ago, Lovelock, a 2A team, knocked off the Senators by eight points.

“I talked a lot about that game,” Carson coach Melissa Larsen said after Saturday’s game. “We weren’t losing to them again.

“Playing back-to-back games is hard, and we came out flat in the first quarter. We started to play (better) basketball in the second quarter.”

The score was tied five times in the opening half — 2, 17, 19, 24 and 26 — before the Mustangs’ Taryn Houston scored inside the final minute to give her team a 28-26 lead at the half.

Lily Bouza scored on a three-point play 10 seconds into the second half to give the Senators a 29-28 lead. Carson never trailed again.

Abbey Paulson had back-to-back baskets to stretch the lead to 33-28, and Haley Garver added a basket and Lauren Lemburg two free throws to close out the quarter.

Lovelock was its own worst enemy, turning the ball over seven times.

Lovelock trimmed the lead to 39-32 with 6:07 left in the game, but two free throws by Bouza and a putback by Bella Kordonowy stretched the lead to double digits with less than four minutes left.

“We were more aggressive on defense in the second half,” Larsen said. “We still need to get better. We still have to do a better job on the little things.”

Bouza led the way with 16 points and Garver added eight.

Dayton girls lose twice

ELKO — The Dust Devils dropped lopsided decisions to Spring Creek (63-21) and Elko (54-24) over the weekend.

In the Spring Creek game, Dayton trailed 21-2 at the quarter and 42-13 at the half. And, Dayton went 5-for-20 at the line to make matters worse.

“Spring Creek came out strong and we couldn’t get any momentum,” Dayton coach Kelly Frantz said. “We just got outplayed.”

Tamia Powell led Dayton with six points and Aleea Howe added five.

Elko outscored Dayton 41-15 in the second half. Howe and Shainey Vincent had seven points apiece, and Powell added five points and nine rebounds.

“I felt like we gave up too many easy baskets,” Frantz said. “We didn’t rotate defensively as we should have.”

Falcons lose, 30-11

Sierra Lutheran was outscored in every quarter en route to a lopsided loss to Smith Valley on Saturday.

Brie Wiles and Ruth Boogman led in scoring with four points each and Aleyna Gilson added two points and seven rebounds.

“Tough shooting night,” said SLHS coach Michael Nelson. “We just didn’t have the energy to bounce back after the tough game against VC (on Friday). We are learning new roles and each day we learn a little more about ourselves.”

BOYS BASKETBALL

Carson wins twice

SUSANVILLE, California — Carson High capped the Lassen Tournament with wins over Mt. Shasta and Willows on Saturday.

Carson beat Mt. Shasta, 43-39, Saturday morning, and then after a brief break, hammered Willows, 71-49.

Mt. Shasta led 22-15 at the half, but Carson tied it early in the third period, and it was back and forth the rest of the way. Trent Robison led Carson with 20 points.

In the win over Willows, Robison scored 20 and Jonny Randall added 11.

Carson is off until next Friday and Saturday when it plays North Valleys and McQueen.

Dust Devils drop 2

ELKO — Dayton dropped Northern 3A games to Spring Creek and Elko over the weekend.

On Friday, Dayton lost to Spring Creek, 51-32. Trevor Burrows and Josh Pasasouk each had 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Saturday, Elko improved to 7-0 with a 65-37 win over the Dust Devils.

Burrows had another double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Chase Peterson finished with seven and Pasasouk added six points with eight rebounds.

Sierra Lutheran rolls

Kyman Berger scored 19 points, grabbed seven rebounds, dished out three assists and blocked three shots to lead the Falcons to a 69-38 win over Smith Valley.

Nathan Waite added 14 points and Logan Schinzing tallied 11 with seven rebounds. Bret Walker finished with seven points, and Grant Goins and Thomas Mellum added six each.

“Good team win tonight,” said coach Ben Walther. “Played good defense and especially rebounded well. We shared the ball, as evidenced by a balanced score sheet. Great effort and win.”
