SILVER DOLLARS AND WOODEN NICKELS: Saluting our sheriff’s deputy heroes

Silver Dollars and Wooden Nickels is a weekly feature in the Appeal’s Sunday Opinion pages in which the Appeal gives Silver Dollars to those who deserve recognition and occasionally a Wooden Nickel to those who deserve criticism.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Carson City Sheriff’s Deputy Chris Rivera who was honored with the Purple Heart Award and Lifesaving Award by the Sheriff’s Office. Rivera was presented both awards for his actions while detaining a suspect. Also to Deputy Uriel Collazo who received the Lifesaving Award for his actions in assisting Rivera in the same incident. Rivera was also honored as the Sworn Employee of the Year. Other award winners were: Supervisor of the Year, Sgt. Craig Lowe; Volunteer of the Year, Diana Phillips; Civilian Employee of the Year, Jennifer Graves; Team of the Year: Bekah Bock, Deputies Israel Loyola, Nick Pinochi, Jessica Dickey, Donald Gibson, Lowe.

SILVER DOLLAR: Also to Jerome Tushbant for being named Carson City’s new assistant sheriff.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Joel Dunn for his more than 30 years of service to Carson City, ranging from being Parks and Recreation director to his most recent position as Carson City Culture & Tourism Authority director. Dunn retired from that position in October.

SILVER DOLLAR AND WOODEN NICKEL: The Carson City Post Office deserves a Wooden Nickel for not being able to make sure mail is delivered in a timely manner but the local postal workers who are working several shifts to deliver that mail as best they can deserve a Silver Dollar.
