Oasis Academy’s Lady Bighorns smoked the Coral Academy of Science — Reno girls basketball team last Thursday, 48-12.
The Lady Bighorns outscored the Lady Falcons in each quarter. The first quarter was a sweep, with Oasis coming away 11-0. The second saw a similar outcome, going into halftime 21-2.
Oasis didn’t slow down at all going into the second half. Coral Academy tried to fight back, but could not get past the Oasis defense, 32-5.
The final quarter was the best for the Falcons, with them scoring the most of their points; Oasis was still on fire, though, reaching their top score as well, going 16-7.
The outcome was a team effort for the Lady Bighorns where every player scored. Brooklyn Whitaker led the team with 15 points including three free throws; Sadie O’Flaherty and Mariah Snooks were close behind her with 10 and 9 points respectively.
Oasis coach Dusty Casey said he is pleased with the team’s defense and rebounding. He noted the team is nailing down its defensive rotations in the full and half court zones and are improving on shooting.
“Offensively, we are getting shots where we want, but we need to improve our shooting percentage,” Casey said. “We also need to work on handling defensive pressure better, especially against a press.”
The Lady Bighorns next game is after the new year. Oasis Academy hosts Yerington’s junior varsity team at Venturacci Park, Jan. 5 at 1 p.m.
