Carson has five wrestlers in semis

RENO — Carson High wrestling coach Keith Shaffer expected five of his wrestlers to still be alive for a title at the Northern 4A Championships and his team met his expectations.

Five CHS wrestlers advanced to the semifinals on Friday at the tournament held at Reno High. As expected Nathan Mersino (138 pounds), Abel Carter (195), Brandon Basa (113) and Sheldon Miller (heavyweight) all advanced to the semifinals.

Kyle Rudy, though, lost a wild match and didn’t make the semifinals as expected at 132. But in somewhat of a surprise, Jarod Butler did make the semifinals at 160.

Rudy is also still alive as is all 12 of Carson’s wrestlers. Fourteen of Carson’s 16 wrestlers are still alive as two non-scoring wrestlers will wrestle today as well.

Carson is fourth in the team standings behind Spanish Springs (68), Reno (66), Damonte Ranch (49.5) and Carson (46). “We did pretty well there,” said Carson Coach Keith Shaffer about having all of his 12 scoring wrestlers still alive.

Butler pinned Reno’s Dylan Cox to advance to the semifinals. Shaffer said he felt Butler was “on the bubble” as far as having a shot at a title. “He was a good surprise a little bit for us,” Shaffer said.

Shaffer said Rudy also has an excellent chance to qualify for state by finishing in the top three.

“He should take third, hopefully he’ll be able to do that,” Shaffer said.

Rudy lost to McQueen’s Tyler Green 12-10. Rudy led 10-7 until a wild last 10 seconds in which Green took Rudy to his back for a five-point move. It appeared Rudy had scored a reversal to tie the match 12-12, but it was ruled time ran out. Rudy came back to pin Spanish Springs Logan Blocher to stay alive.

Eli Thomas also was impressive in going 2-1 at 106. Jake Roman (145), Seth Reichelt (152), Jesse Case (170), Kellen McDermott (182) and John Rowe (220) are all still alive.

Non-scoring wrestlers Darryll Heyward and Bryce Newhall are also still alive although Heyward has to wrestle Reichelt at 152 in the consolation quarterfinals.

The tournament gets underway at 10 a.m. today with the championship finals to be held sometime around 3:30 p.m.

Dayton wins in OT

DAYTON — Dayton outscored Lowry 17-9 in overtime to grab a 64-56 victory Friday night.

The game was tied at 47 at the end of regulation.

Trevor Burrows scored five of his 20 points in the extra period, J.J. Ply had four of his 28 and Brenden Thomas added four points.

Ply had his sixth double-double of the season as he added 10 rebounds. Burrows had a couple of key steals.

Dayton hosts Truckee today at 2:30.

Muckers rip S. Valley

Virginia City improved to 9-2 with an easy 59-24 win over Smith Valley in a Northern 1A game.

Colt Hess led the way with 21 points and Tanner Uken added 19. Ireland Franklin reached double figures with 11.

Virginia City hosts Pyramid Lake today at 3:30 p.m.

GIRLS VARSITY BASKETBALL

Carson wins,tied for second

The Senators improved to 6-8 in league with a 48-41 win over Damonte Ranch Friday at Morse Burley Gym.

Carson is tied with Douglas for second place. The rivals square off next Friday in Minden. Galena is a game back at 5-9.

Abbey Paulson (11) and Haley Garver (8) combined for 19 first-half points to spark the Senators to a 29-14 lead.

In the second half, Lauren Lemburg scored 13 of her game-high 23 to help Carson stave off a late Damonte rally. Damonte cut the lead down to seven points with 3:30 left, but got no closer.

“Haley and Abbey played real well in the first half,” Carson coach Melissa Larsen. “They both did a good job of attacking the basket.”

Carson gave up some second-chance points to Alexis Wright, who scored all of her 17 in the second half.

Dayton falls

DAYTON — Dayton played well in the first quarter and trailed just 9-5, but ended up losing to Lowry 56-24. Lowry extended its led to 29-10 at halftime.Lowry up.

“I was really happy with the intensity our girls came out with and we played really well all game defensively,” Dayton coach Kelly Frantz said.

Elora Neep had nine points, four rebounds and two steals. Aleea McGill-Howe had five points and four rebounds and Abby Sikora and Kristina both finished with four points for the Dust Devils.

Sierra Lutheran splits

Sierra Lutheran rolled to a 50-7 win over Excel Christian.

Grace Bonafede had a double-doubel with 17 points and four rebounds, Clare Davison had eight points and six steals, Aleyna Gibson and Marin Woomer each scored six points and Brynna Hansen added six rebounds for the Falcons.

Dsepite another monster game from Bonafede, Sierra Lutheran fell to Greenville 31-23 on Thursday. Bonafede had a triple double, posting 13 points, 13 rebounds, 12 steals and six blocks.

Carson grabs win

Jackson Sayre and Gavin McIntosh scored 12 points and Christian Ortega added eight points for Carson (10-10) in its 50-43 win over Damonte Ranch.

Carson triumphs

RENO — The Senators broke open a close game with 26 fourth-quarter points for a 67-53 win over Damonte Ranch.

Bradley Maffei led Carson with 26 points and Eric Tomita scored 12.
