Prep Roundup: Carson girls, both Dayton teams win

Carson High scored the game’s first 10 points en route to a 43-25 win over Wooster Tuesday night at Morse Burley Gym.

The win boosted Carson’s record to 7-8 overall entering the season finale Friday at Douglas. The winner of Friday’s game enters the playoffs as the No. 2 seed.

“We played a really good first half,” Carson coach Melissa Larsen said. “We didn’t take care of the ball in the second half. We just stopped attacking.”

Carson scored just 12 second-half points after grabbing a 31-9 first-half lead.

Bella Kordonowy, who led all scorers with 15 points, had 12 in the first half. Ten of those came in the opening quarter when Carson bolted to a 16-3 lead.

Carson started the second quarter with a 13-4 run, as Wooster went four-plus minutes without a field goal.

Wooster never got closer than 14 points in the second half.

Abbey Paulson added seven points and Lulu Street six.

Dayton wins

SPARKS — Aleea McGill-Howe had a huge fourth quarter, scoring 14 points in the period, as Dayton held of Sparks 53-45.

Howe finished with 25 points, going 9-for-13 from the foul line and added four steals.

Dayton led 24-16 at halftime. “I was upset going into halftime because I didn’t feel we were being aggressive enough and let Sparks put up too many shots,” Dayton coach Kelly Frantz said.

Abby Sikora had 10 points and 11 rebounds, Kristina Mason had four points, 14 rebounds and five steals. Shainey Vincent scored six points while Elora Neep added four points and eight boards for the Dust Devils.

“I was happy that our girls ran better in the second half, led by Aleea and it was great to get a win on the road in our last week of the season. Aleea did an amazing job of staying calm in the fourth quarter, taking the ball to the hoop and I am so happy that she had such a strong game offensively.”

Sierra Lutheran falls

Grace Bonafede had six points and 14 rebounds, Clare Davison had eight points and seven steals and Brynna Hansen added five points, six rebounds and six steals, but it wasn’t enough for Sierra Lutheran in a 37-21 loss to Smith Valley.

Dayton stays in contention

SPARKS — J.J. Ply scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Dayton to a 54-36 win over Sparks in a 3A game Tuesday night.

Dayton improved to 5-9 in league play with home games against Elko and Spring Creek this weekend. The Dust Devils are fighting for the final playoff spot with Lowry.

“It was a very physical game,” Dayton assistant coach Kevin Ply said.

The Dust Devils got 14 points, three rebounds and four assists from Trevor Burrows. Carson Crosby contributed eight points and 10 rebounds in one of his best games of the season.

Muckers pummel Excel

VIRGINIA CITY — Three players reached double figures to lead Virginia City to an easy 68-29 win over Excel Christian Tuesday night in a 1A game.

Virginia City improved to 10-2, and visits Whittell on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Ireland Franklin led the way with 22 followed by Colt Hess with 21 and Tanner Uken 10.

Carson rolls

Jackson Sayre scored 15 points, Colton Shafer had 10 points and Gavin McIntosh and Garrett Clampitt each added eight points for Carson (11-12) in its 65-20 win over Wooster.

RENO — Carson came out strong from the start and never trailed in a 58-36 win over Wooster.

Max Fontaine lead all scorers with a season-high 15 points followed by Bradley Maffei with 10. Eric Tomita and Dougie Hostler added nine each.
