The Carson High School Booster Club is hosting its seventh annual Safe and Sober 5k to benefit the CHS Safe Grad program.

The 5k will be held Saturday at the Carson High School track. The event is the Booster Club’s biggest fundraiser for the $32,000 Safe Grad event.

Safe Grad is an event for seniors that the school has put on every year since 1988 to promote a safe, alcohol- and drug-free graduation night. The students celebrate the end of high school with an all-night sober celebration followed by a trip to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom Amusement Park in California.

“It is important for the kids, for them to have a safe place to go to keep them off the streets and not partying,” said organizer Kyra Hinton. “It is also a good place to make the last bit of memories with their friends before they go to college.”

Hinton said in the past, the race has raised nearly $10,000 for the program, and they expect similar participant numbers this year. In addition to the race, Hinton said the community has supported the event and donated raffle prizes and more to help raise the money for Safe Grad.

“It is good for the community to show they care about our kids and that their safety is important,” Hinton said.

The race will go around the track field, then around Carson High and participants will get a T-shirt and swag bag with their registration.

Participants can register at race360.com/16632 or register the day of the race. Registration for adults is $35 and registration for children 12 to 18 is $25. Runners under 12 years old will be free. Raffle tickets will also be available for purchase online or the day of for $5 each or 5 for $20.

Check in will be at 9 a.m. on Saturday at the football field for those pre-registered. If registering the day of the race, check in will start at 8:30 a.m. Packet pickup can also be done Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at The Gift Box, located at 675 Fairview Drive Suite 223, or at the race.
