Garrett, Gonzalez headed to LTCC for soccer

Two Carson High soccer stars are part of the 2017 Lake Tahoe Community College recruiting class.

Defender Peter Garrett, the 2016 Gatorade Player of the Year in Nevada and an all-league performer for the Senators, and forward-midfielder Alex Gonzalez are part of the 26-player recruiting class announced by LTCC head coach Nicholas R. Arbelaez.

The class includes 14 players from the Northern Nevada area. There are several California players in the class as well as several foreign players. Eleven players come from the highly successful Sagebrush 98 club squad.

“Peter is a skillfull center back with good distribution skills,” Arbelaez said. “He is fast, has great timing and difficult to beat. He is very good in the air.

“Alex is a speedy wing player with the ability to get behind the defense and score goals. He is very smart on the field.”

Carson girls visit Reed in opener

Carson High’s girls basketball team, third-place finishers in the Sierra League at 7-9, visit Reed, the second-place team out of the High Desert, in the quarterfinals of the NIAA 4A regional playoffs today.

The Senators had an opportunity to host a first-round game, but they lost at Douglas on Saturday.

Reed enters the game as a heavy favorite after an 82-42 win over the Senators in December.

Carson’s top scorer is Lauren Lemburg, who has several 20-point games to her credit. Haley Garver, who missed the Douglas game, will be a game-time decision. That duo has carried the load this year.

The key for Carson will be at the defensive end. The Raiders like to penetrate and dish to the corner for open 3-pointers. Taylor Johnson averages around 15 a game, while Vanessa Hernandez and Autumn Wadsworth are at 10 a contest. Former Douglas star Janae Bluehorse averages around nine per contest.

“They are a good team,” CHS coach Melissa Larsen said. “They all can shoot, they drive and they like to shoot 3s. We have to defend that. They also play really good defense and trap real well. We have to move the ball and attack the basket.”

Registration open for DV men’s group

The Dayton Valley Palmer Club is open to public membership and now accepting applications for the 2017 season. Any male golfer age 18 or older can join by paying annual dues of $250. Dues for members who have a 2017 GHIN handicap with another golf club are $220.

The full dues fee includes Northern Nevada Golf Association (NNGA) membership with GHIN number and handicap and entry into 10 tournaments. Tournaments include a Skins Game, club championship and two-day Member-Member tournament. Also on the schedule are the 26th annual Member-Guest Invitational and Annual Arnie’s Cup Match Play Championship that require additional entry fees.

The Palmer Club will play each 2017 tournament in two flights. Members must designate the flight they’re going to play for the full 2017 season prior to the first tournament they play.

The Aviara Flight plays from the blue tees (6,637 yards) and combo tees (6,257 yards). The Bay Hill Flight plays from the white tees (5,897 yards) and silver tees (5,161 yards and you must be 70 years of age or older to play from the Silver tees).

Palmer Club members also receive a discounted green fee on tournament days and are eligible to play in weekly Palmer Men’s Club events on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday with reserved tee times.

The season begins on March 11 with an Individual Net tournament.

Virginia City takes 2nd place

Virginia City knocked off Whittell, 40-30, to finish second in league.

The teams split the season series, but the Muckers move on due to the point differential.

The Muckers will enter the conference tournament this weekend as the No. 2 seed and meet Owyhee at 3 p.m. Thursday.

Colt Hess led VC with 19 points and Ireland Franklin added 12.

Eagle Valley sweeps Alder Creek in 2

Eagle Valley’s seventh-grade volleyball team improved to 8-0 in league and 14-1 overall after a 25-17 and 25-13 win over Alder Creek in TahNeva action recently.

Lilly Ralla had 10 service points, four kills and two digs, Caydee Farnworth added five kills, four service points and six digs, and Emma Stagliano was credited with nine service points, three aces, three digs, a kill and four assists. Olivia Smith added three aces and eight assists.
