CCMS volleyball growing strong

Churchill County Middle School’s volleyball teams are becoming stronger with each game. They played matches in Yerington Tuesday and more at home Wednesday against Fernley.

Seventh-grade coach Heather Stokes said her team beat Yerington in two matches, 25-17, for both sets. She said the team played well overall, getting good hits and communicating well.

“We just had a really good game,” Stokes said. “It was awesome.”

Fallon won Wednesday’s match in three sets. Fallon took the the first set; the second went to Fernley, and the third went to Fallon. Stokes said their serving and passing were a big component to their victory. She also said they had a strong defense Wednesday — there were only a handful of turnovers in the first set.

“The girls hustled hard today,” she said.

Stokes said Kamryn Paladini had great hits and played well at the net. Emily Clyburn was also praised for how well she played under pressure; Stokes recalled Clyburn finished out the first and third matches while serving — Clayburn led the team by serving 15 points.

Stokes said she’s impressed with the growth her team shows. She said the way they play now is “night and day” to how they started the season.

“They’re playing volleyball,” she said. “It’s so much fun to watch.”

The eighth-grade team lost its match against Yerington in two sets. They also lost Wednesday after a hard-fought three sets; the eighth-graders won the first match, Wednesday, but lost the second and third.

Eighth-grade coach Nicole Rogne could not be reached for comment.

The teams play against Winnemucca at home today at 2 p.m. Stokes said she doesn’t know much about their team. She said the match is mostly for fun so the teams can get more practice.
