Prep Roundup: Dayton falls to Fernley in 3A playoffs

WINNEMUCCA — The Dayton boys basketball team ran into a hot shooting Fernley team in the Northern 3A playoffs on Thursday.

Dayton, the No. 6 seed, couldn’t keep up with No. 3 seeded Fernley in a 63-44 loss. “They just shot the lights out,” said Dayton assistant coach Kevin Ply about Fernley.

Fernley hit 11 three-pointers through the first three quarters, including eight in the first half. J.J. Ply posted his league-leading 11th double double of the season with 27 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks for the Dust Devils.

Also for Dayton, Trevor Burrows had eight points, four steals and three assists, Brenden Thomas had seven rebounds and Carson Crosby added six rebounds. “It was a great season for us,” Coach Ply said.

1A playoffs

ELKO — Virginia City, the West’s No. 2 seed, fell to the East’s No. 3 seed Owyhee 55-50 in the Northern 1A playoffs. Meanwhile, Sierra Lutheran, the West’s No. 4 seed, upset the East’s No. 1 seed, McDermitt, 55-46. Sierra Lutheran will play Owyhee in the semifinals at 8 p.m. today at Elko High. The winner will advance to the state tournament.

SOFTBALL

Purcell, Pack in Vegas

For the third time in as many years, the Wolf Pack softball team will travel south to UNLV to compete in the De Marini Classic today. At the event last season, Nevada swept its competition, going a perfect 5-0 in the tournament. The Pack outscored its opponents 37-14, posting two shutouts in the process. The Wolf Pack squares off against two teams it saw last year at the De Marini Classic in UTEP and Southern Utah.

The Pack plays BYU, 2-2, at 12:15 and UTEP at 7 p.m. With seven hits in five games last weekend, former Carson High star Jennifer Purcell extended her hitting streak to 12 games dating back to last season. She’s hitting .438 with four RBI.

Former Douglas star Kali Sargent went 2-1 last weekend with an ERA of 1.94.
