Thoughts on renaming Columbus Day
As a Viking whose pasty white ancestors beat Columbus to North America by 500 years, I too am offended by Columbus Day. But smearing the calendar with whiteout and penning in Indigenous People’s Day just covers one lie with another.
Instead, Oct. 12 should be renamed African American Day — the day we celebrate our common heritage. Mitochondrial Eve Day is also acceptable to my people and the uneasy spirit of Leif Erickson.
Notwithstanding the 15,000 years of squatters rights Native Americans earned, they too are immigrants. Just one of the few successful migrations out of our African motherland.
Importantly legislative time spent on the murderous Columbus matter assures Nevada students they won’t leapfrog pesky Mississippi for education’s coveted 49th spot for at least two more years.
