Christian Chamberlain, Drew Rippingham and Tommy Challis combined to score 45 points Saturday night as the Reno High boys basketball team outlasted Bishop Manogue, 62-51, in the Northern 4A Region Tournament boys basketball championship game in Carson City.
Chamberlain scored 16 points, 11 in the second half, while Rippingham added 15 and Challis 14 to lead the Huskies before a packed house at Tom Andreasen Court.
Reno (22-6 overall) now advances to the NIAA State Championships this Thursday and Friday in Las Vegas.
Rippingham, whose last-second 3-pointer on Thursday lifted Reno past Galena in the semifinals, connected on three 3-pointers, including a clutch shot that gave the Huskies a 52-42 lead with 3:10 left to play. Rippingham added four free throws in the final 1:22 to help Reno close out its win.
And the 6-foot-7 Challis was a force inside with 11 rebounds and four blocked shots. Three of those blocks came inside the final six minutes before halftime during a span when Reno outscored Manogue 14-4 to turn a 15-14 deficit into a 28-19 halftime lead. Rippingham scored five points during that run, including a 3-pointer off an assist from Challis that gave Reno a 19-15 lead.
Reno led by as many as 15 points — 42-27 with 1:55 left in the third quarter — before the Miners mounted a comeback.
Manogue scored eight unanswered points early in the fourth quarter and pulled to within 45-40 on a pair of Kolton Frugoli free throws with 5:07 to go.
The Huskies answered with a 7-2 run of their own, including a 3-pointer by Rippingham that pushed the lead back to double digits, 52-42.
Manogue was led offensively by sophomores Gabe Bansuelo with 16 points each. Bansuelo scored 11 in the fourth quarter. Josh Rolling, another sophomore, added eight points for the Miners.
