The armchair critics have been revisiting Nevada’s status as one of the worst states in education, saying student achievement remains low.
It depends in which county students attend school.
When statisticians crunch the numbers, the composite gives a skewed look at the entire state. Granted, some counties need CPR to bring up student scores, but others are doing much better.
Churchill County is on par with the above-average states with a B-, far from great but also far from hitting rock bottom. This is based on when the LVN obtained the county’s statistics and used the formula to enter the numbers.
With that said, Churchill County students in public, private and charter schools still continue to excel.
Students from the Churchill County schools qualify for honors music programs. Math students from both Oasis Academy and Churchill County School District did well at state competition. High-school students from both Oasis and Churchill County High School are at the top of their class in taking university-level classes in Western Nevada College’s Jump Start program that allows juniors and seniors to excel in college courses.
The annual Navy Junior ROTC inspection at CCHS allowed cadets to show their drill and ceremony and military bearing during inspection. Cadets learn invaluable life lessons and how to deal with obstacles. To show their civic spirit, the 4-H program recognized first responders and the contributions these people make to our community.
Fallon police, the sheriff’s office, Care Flight, fire and rescue, Naval Air Station Fallon and Banner Churchill Community Hospital EMTs were among the departments receiving recognition.
This pride and dedication in the classroom carries over to athletic competition. The CCHS wrestling team placed second at the 3A state wrestling tournament, and two wrestlers, Jack Swisher and Sean McCormick, each won state championships.
More impressively, the team won the academic title for the wrestlers’ combined grade-point average. Those who compete know it’s no easy task to maintain great grades and great skills on the mat.
The Lady Wave basketball team dominated the opposition and easily defeated Lowry for the regional title. This may be Fallon’s year to bring home a state trophy this weekend.
The pride and dedication the team has put into their game this year is on the verge of paying dividends at Las Vegas.
All the students mentioned from the regional, state and local programs and others in Churchill County make Greenwave country a great place to live and for students to have the opportunity to compete and do well against students from larger schools. Fallon, the village with that protective arm around every student, knowing each will perform well in academics and athletics.
