150 Years Ago

Avalanche at Bigler Road: An awful avalanche took the life of Charles G. Chadwick. His friend Sam Robinson came to at the dead of night and found himself partly immersed in water, almost naked. He discovered that he was far down in a ravine below the place where the cabin stood. He went to the barn and to keep from perishing got under a pile of manure. It was too old to afford any warmth so he started for his neighbor, Mr. Mooney. He could go no farther and remained with a shirt and a pair of drawers until daylight when occupants of Mooney’s cabin came to his relief. Robinson was frozen all over. The avalanche filled the lowlands and lodged to the depth of a hundred feet or more.

DeNeuf-Fuller wedding: The couple were married at the residence of Mr. John G. Fox by Rev. George R. Davis of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. The handsome bride and popular bridegroom are residents of Carson City. Everyone in the city will follow the example of the Appeal and throw the clipper of good luck after them. The bride received the following gifts (in part): beautiful gold olive set (Mr. and Mrs. H. M. of Yerington), gold knickknack dish (Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Bender), gold black coffee set (Mr. and Mrs. Fred Dangberg), beautiful vase (Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Hofer), and handsome smelling salt bottle (Mr. Budd Bliss).

A citizen’s complaint: Letter to the editor — The Post Office sent a man out to number the houses at 50 cents per house. The man who numbered houses skipped from one end of town to the other, hear and there, and numbered two houses the same number on the same street ... and some houses were not numbered at all. The people of Carson should donate money to hire a man to go around and number the houses and streets right.

Conforte: If Joe Conforte, former brothel operator, wants to plead his case, he’ll have to do it in person and not from Chile. He has been indicted for taking large amounts of money from his Mustang Ranch Brothel and hiding the cash in foreign banks while the brothel was in bankruptcy proceedings.
