The people and businesses who helped Carson City Parks and Recreation will be honored at the 2017 Community Service Awards ceremony on July 12.
The free outdoor event will be at 5:30 p.m. at the monument at the entrance to Marv Teixeira Pavilion in Mills Park.
An open house reception at the Wungnema House, the stone house on the east end of Mills Park, will follow the ceremony.
The awards are presented to individuals, organizations, and businesses who make a significant contribution to the combined missions of the Foundation and the Carson City Department of Parks, Recreation, and Open Spaces.
This year’s winners include: Chris MacKenzie, Volunteer of the Years, for his work coaching and volunteering with the department’s sports leagues for more than nine years; Robyn Orloff, Volunteer of the Year, for her volunteer work cleaning dump sites and homeless camps, removing trash along trails and recycling in the community; Muscle Powered, Organization of the Year, for promoting a walkable and bike-friendly community for more than two decades, planning and maintaining multiuse paths and sponsoring several walking and biking activities; and CarsonNow.org, Business of the Year, for helping the department distribute news online and on social media.
The selection of award recipients is a cooperative effort between the Parks Department and the Foundation.
Each recipient’s name will be placed on the monument in Mills Park. In addition, the names of Thomas P. Tarpey and Francis Xavier Holub will be added to the Wall of Memory.
