Philosophy and meditation are some of the major components to yoga.
Now, it can be obtained in one place at the Carson City Library, thanks to Community Yogi, which donated 10 books of all things yoga.
“By partnering with Community Yogi to provide free yoga to the public the Carson City Library is providing opportunities to learn and grow through fitness,” said Carson City Library Creative Manager Natalie Wood. “In addition to learning about yoga through an actual class, the books offer the opportunity to learn and grow with yoga, meditation and mindfulness.”
Community Yogi’s Mindfulness Collection consists of titles such as “Sacred Sanskrit Words” and “Meditation: The Complete Guide.”
The event is called Bookworm Yoga and a title is featured once a week during yoga sessions inside of the library. The event may also take place outside, depending on the weather.
“We would love to have people of all ages and experience levels join us for Bookworm Yoga,” said Rachel March, senior library assistant. “Allison is incorporating the ideas behind a different book into each class, so whether someone is a complete beginner or an experienced yogi, they will learn something new and have fun.”
Allison Reitz is the innovation behind Community Yogi, which launched in November. The idea is to host yoga classes at public venues, such as coffee shops, where participants can pay at their own price.
Classes consist a variety such as candlelight yin yoga, aroma yoga, and senior chair yoga in venues like dams Hub and Comma Coffee on scheduled days.
The organization also expanded to Reno, with a new yoga series debuting this summer at Rancho San Rafael Park.
“It’s about hosting yoga and meditation in creative local places,” she said.
Many of the titles Community Yogi contributed explore yoga teachings and could deepen a patron’s yoga practice, March said. Other titles enriched the library’s collection of books on Eastern philosophy, mindfulness and meditation.
Wood said the yoga series at the library is part of the Summer Learning Challenge, which promotes reading and learning during the summer through reading goals and library programs.
Many of the titles Community Yogi contributed explore these teachings, and they can really deepen a patron’s yoga practice. Other titles enriched the library’s collection of books on Eastern philosophy, mindfulness and meditation.
Bookworm Yoga summer series is every Sunday at noon, at the Carson City Library until July 30. The price is free but a payment is appreciated to help support the instructors of the organization; 80 percent of gathered revenue goes toward the community yoga instructors, and 20 percent is reserved for more rental spaces, future classes, and to support the organization.
Community members who are interested in participating in yoga must have a library card with us and be registered for the Summer Learning Challenge.
Library cards are free and registration can be completed in person or online.
Once completed, you will need to come into the library in person with a valid photo ID.
If they already have a library card, all they need to do is register for the Summer Learning Program.
