HOF seeks donations for inaugural class

It’s been a month since the historic announcement and now’s your chance to help become part of that history.

With the Greenwave Hall of Fame’s first class announcement last month, 35 Greenwave figures and teams will be inducted on Oct. 7. But the HOF needs the community’s help as it’s shown countless times.

Putting on the first-ever induction ceremony has a decent price tag to accommodate the awards, display and dinner. Sponsorship opportunities are available, beginning at $500 and up to $2,000. All levels include tickets to the HOF dinner and season passes to watch the Greenwave compete in Fallon.

Tickets for the dinner will go on sale next month and the HOF will be at the community reunion selling T-shirts. Stop by the booth and talk with several of the HOF members and help contribute to this long overdue recognition of those who made the Greenwave what it is today.

Baseball hits the midway point

The funny thing about baseball is a lot can happen in nine months.

You have high expectations during spring training and after the first month of the regular season, you’re almost ready to move onto the next sport. The all-star game this week marked baseball’s intermission and there are several surprising teams in contention for the playoffs with three months to go.

To no surprise, Boston leads the American League East but the last-place team, Toronto, is only 8.5 games out. Cleveland is proving last year wasn’t a fluke as it leads the AL Central but Minnesota has finally come out from the basement to be 2.5 games from first. Kansas City is right behind the Twins.

In the most lopsided division of the AL, the Astros have a 16.5-game lead over Los Angeles for first. Houston is 31 games above .500 and is 33-11 on the road.

The National League is a little more predictable with Washington leading the East and the Dodgers, who have a 0.5-game lead over Houston for the best record, in front of the West. Unlike the AL West, Los Angeles’ lead is 7.5 games over Arizona, which has a 53-36 record, the second best in the NL.

The Cubs are flirting with .500 after winning the World Series last year but the team to chase is Milwaukee, which sits at 50-41 with a 5.5-game lead.

Who will make the playoffs in October? Count on Boston, New York, Cleveland, Kansas City and Houston for the AL and Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, Colorado and Arizona for the NL.

Football is almost here

The NFL begins training camp this month, which means preseason games are less than a month away.

Like baseball, fans are optimistic going into the season until their team starts tanking in the first month or two, prompting their attention to be directed elsewhere. Every season produces great moments and it will be fun to watch the AFC West, especially.

Josh Mauga re-signed with Kansas City and if he can stay injury-free, he’ll get a chance to help his team challenge the Raiders for the divisional title. In case you’re wondering, both teams face each other in October in Oakland for Thursday Night Football.

College football is almost here, too, and what expectations will Nevada fans have with the new team? Don’t expect the Wolf Pack to run the ball much but what will you be happy with at the end of the season? A bowl berth might be unrealistic but as long as the team improves each week and holds onto the Fremont Cannon, then count the season a success.
