School supply drive to help Carson City students in need

For the second year, Carson City Parks and Recreation is partnering with the Salvation Army to make sure local students have the supplies they need when school begins.

The Summer Kamp School Supply Donation Drive will kick off Monday and runs through Aug. 12.

Organizers say they need everything from pencils and erasers to binders and backpacks.

Other items needed are glue, scissors, markers, crayons, notebook paper, folders, lunch and pencil boxes, binders, rulers, calculators, tissues, pens, colored pencils, hand sanitizer, USB flash drives, binder dividers, index cards, ice packs, pencil sharpeners and anything else students may need at school.

Last summer saw the first partnership between Parks and Recreation and Salvation Army for the donation drive.

“Last year we had a tremendous amount of donations dropped off to us from our families in the program as well as the public and we could not have been more thankful,” Sierra Fowzer, youth programs supervisor for Parks and Recreation, said in an email.

Organizers are hoping for a similar turnout this year.

Anyone who wants to help can bring school supplies to the Carson City Aquatic Facility, open daily at 841 N. Roop St., or the Carson City Multi-purpose Athletic Center, 1860 Russell Way.

A donation bin also will be stationed at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St.

All donations will benefit families in Carson City and surrounding communities.
