All sorts: An attempt is being made to induce the Finlayson sisters of Reno, and Dickie Jose (Cornish counter-tenor), to give a concert here.

Mackay mining building condemned: The Mackay mining building at the University of Nevada was condemned by Architect Bliss. The walls have to be torn down and rebuilt with new materials. The condemnation of the Mackay building was caused by the chipped stone being placed in the walls. “Mackay wants a first-class building erected,” according to President Stubbs. (It was completed in 1908).

100 Years Ago

Slip, knit, purl: The Red Cross headquarters yarn will be given out for various articles to be knitted for soldiers. A woman will be present to help the unproficient get started. Instructions for knitting several articles of comfort are printed in the Appeal (for wristlets, heelless and knitted socks).

Photo captions: Mills Park pet show, Smallest dog category — Because they are little dogs, Honcho and Lady won first prizes for Sandra Hyers and Dale Brown.

Mike Loy’s desert turtle and one belonging to his brother, Brian, won prizes for being the largest reptiles at the show. Pink and blue ribbons were attached to their shells.

Woolworth’s closing: A 117-year-old business ends as Woolworth closes its businesses across the country. More than 400 F. W. Woolworth stores will close and 9,200 employees will lose their jobs. Frank W. Woolworth created the store in 1879 when he added 10-cent items to his “Great 5-Cent Store.”

Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
