150 Years Ago

Episcopal Church edifice: We learn from Mr. Yerington the contract for building the church edifice was let to the Corbett Brothers. Things are progressing expeditiously and the proceeds of those pleasant gatherings, the Mite Society parties and festivals that the interest money will prove sufficient to carry out this project. We feel assured that a handsome and commodious structure is to be erected. The building is to be of wood throughout.

Methodist Church society: Members are adding finish and point to their house of worship; a gallery has been erected inside, seats have been built and plastering of walls and ceiling done, along with a handsome tower and steeple. On Sept. 8, a regular dedication of the building is expected.

All sorts: To keep moths out of a piano, put pieces of gum camphor the size of a walnut, wrapped in tissue. Moths attack the red cloth used in the construction of the piano, and its renewal is expensive.

All sorts: D. A. McIntosh, insane, jumped into the Truckee river at Reno and drowned himself. He imagined he could walk on water.

Love in: 171 arrests were made at a love-in at Griffith Park in California as hippies, aroused by a scuffle between a Hell’s Angel motorcyclist and policemen, threw rocks and bottles. Ten hippies were treated for injuries.

St. James Village: Twenty custom homes (out of 522 lots available) are under construction at St. James Village. The only entry is via Mount Rose Highway on Joy Lake Road with two more entrances planned. Views are breathtaking — $700,000.
