Your guide to the Carson City Fair

The Carson City Fair officially kicks off Wednesday.

The Fuji Park event begins at 3 p.m. with opening ceremony emceed by well-known personality John Tyson. Also on hand will be the Reno Aces mascot Archie, Youth Theater Carson City Showstoppers singing the national anthem, and Mayor Bob Crowell and supervisors riding an antique 1947 manure spreader provided by the Northern Nevada Antique Power Club.

Exhibits halls will be open where static exhibits featuring crafts such as sewing and quilting, and baked goods and photography will be on display, including the prize winners judged today.

Two days of dog show obedience, rally, showmanship and agility started Monday and will finish today.

Also, on Wednesday livestock for the youth livestock event weigh-in and check-in is from 6-7 p.m. and the carnival opens.

Carnival

The carnival starts up at 5 p.m. Wednesday with the dozen or so rides each costing a $1 each for the evening, said Anita Moreno, transportation coordinator and fair manager for Nevada Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, which manages the carnival and vendors.

After that, tickets and $30 wrist bands for all-day ride fare can be purchased at the ticket booth, but Moreno said to head to the beer booth first to pick up a $5 discount before buying the wrist bands.

The beer booth inside the carnival area will be serving four beers on tap and some canned throughout the event. A smaller beer booth will be set up outside the Carson City Fairgrounds arena in the evenings on July 27-28 for the Bulls, Broncs & Barrels rodeo.

The carnival area also has about 14 vendors, including half a dozen food vendors serving up barbecue, Mexican food, pizza and more.

A disc jockey from McClain’s Mobile Music & DJ will be spinning tunes on the carnival stage from 5-9 p.m., July 27-30.

The carnival hours are 5-10 p.m. Wednesday, 1-10 p.m. July 27-29, and 1-9 p.m. July 30.

Rodeo

Bulls, Broncs & Barrels rodeo featuring bull riding, barrel racing, mutton busting, and more starts at 7 p.m. on July 28-29 in the Carson City Fairgrounds arena, with gates opening at 5:30 p.m.

Tickets are $10 in advance or $14 at the door and children 7 years old and younger are admitted for free. Tickets are available at Benson’s Feed, Bodines Casino, J&T Basque Bar and Dining Room, and the Carson City Visitors Bureau.

Youth livestock

The youth livestock event featuring showmanship, market and breeding categories will take place starting at 8 a.m. on July 27-28 and culminate in livestock auction July 29 at 9 a.m.

The livestock include swine, sheep, goats, beef, dairy goats, dairy cattle, and cavy, rabbit and poultry.

Tractors

The Northern Nevada Antique Power Club is filling up the weekend with antique tractor, car and truck displays. A tractor parade is set for 11 a.m. July 29 and 10 a.m. July 30 and tractor pulls are scheduled on at noon on July 29 and 11 a.m. July 30. On July 29, there will be a silent auction with winners announced at 3 p.m. and a swap meet from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 30 and raffle drawing for an antique tractor at 2 p.m.

Parking

Parking is available in the Topsy Lane Walmart parking lot with free shuttle bus service to and from Fuji Park provided by Jump Around Carson bus service.
