An annual program is kicking off Monday to help make sure local kids are fed through summer.

The Carson City-based nonprofit, Food For Thought, is again holding its Summer Lunch program, providing free and nutritious lunches to ages 2-18.

The meals will be provided from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. weekdays through Aug. 18 at two Carson City locations — Terrance Park, 1327 La Loma Drive, and The Bridge Church, 901 N. Stewart St.

The program provides meals to kids who are unable to access other lunch programs during the months off from school.

Last year’s program served nearly 10,000 meals and even more of a need is expected this year.

Kids don’t need to be enrolled in any program at the meal site, but the meals must be eaten at the serving site and can’t be carried away. Adults aren’t eligible for the federally-funded meals.

Additionally, volunteers are sought to help keep the program running.
