Yes, today is St. Patricks’ Day. And yes, I love corned beef and cabbage. Every St. Patrick’s Day, I always think of the Yogi Berra quote when he responded after being told about a story that happened in Ireland: “Only in America.”
But that’s not what I want to talk about. Yes, St. Patrick’s Day is pretty cool, but with apologies to the Irish, another cool holiday is National Corn Dog Day, which is Saturday. I’m still researching this newfound holiday, but apparently it’s held the first Saturday of the March Madness NCAA Basketball Tournament every year.
And tater tots have also apparently been added to the celebration. I also love tater tots. Throw in tacos and cheeseburgers and it would be Christmas in March. All the things I love in one day.
I think I love the corn dog just because it’s so simple. A corn dog lathered in mustard (not too much mustard) — there’s nothing like it. There’s been plenty of times when I’ve made road trips and I’ve stopped at a convenience store for a couple of corn dogs and mustard.
When I’m on the road, it’s corn dogs and mustard. When I’m at home and I need a late night snack — it’s peanut butter and crackers. Now that’s comfort food.
Corn dogs make perfect sense to me, a lot more sense than a lot of other things we’ve come up with. I’m sure the person who invented the corn dog said, “Why didn’t I think of this before?”
And thanks to that person and the person who came up with National Corn Dog Day, Saturday is going to be a corndog-eat-corndog day.
