Dr. Apollo Hannibal Vaz, resident of Fallon, passed away peacefully at home, Friday, March 17, 2017 with his family and friends by his bedside, after a long battle with cancer.


Apollo was born July 23, 1958 in Bombay, India to Leandro and Vera Vaz.


He came to Reno, Nevada in 1985 on a scholarship to UNR to attain his Ph.D. in Biochemistry. After graduating, he was a visiting scientist at Harvard University, Boston and later at UC Davis. Apollo served as a Chair, Department of Chemistry at Benedictine College, Atchison, Kansas. Apollo decided he wanted to go to Medical School, and earned a Medical Degree (M.D.).


He moved with his wife to Fallon in 2003, and worked as a physician at Banner Hospital. He worked for many different hospitals/clinics in Nevada, including Lovelock prison and Wisconsin over the course of his career. Because of his health, he was unable to work any longer, a career that was marked with many achievements.


He had over 35 years of education, giving so much of his own time to our community, a man that shared his knowledge with many, as a tutor or a mentor. He loved music and played the guitar, he taught other people to play as well. He loved people and loved to have a good time. Apollo was an active member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, belonged to Knights of Columbus and The Elks.


Preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Francis and Fermino; father-in-law, Marcelino.


Apollo is survived by his wife, Prima; daughter, Vera; sisters, Pelgy, Stella, Jacqueline (Thomas), Olivia (Vinoy); sister-in-law, Louella; mother-in-law, Linda; brothers in-law, Cajetan (Sarah), Ryan Zico (Aloma); nieces and nephews, Sheldon, Sasha, Clinton, Sinead, Shane, Joshua, Cassandra; and many friends.


A Mass of the Resurrection will be said on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at 11:00 AM with a visitation one hour prior to Mass at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 850 West 4th Street, Fallon, NV.


Interment will follow at Our Mothers of Sorrows Catholic Cemetery, 2700 North Virginia Street, Reno, NV.


Donations may be made to the Fallon Knights of Columbus towards their pancake breakfast fund (Joannie’s Pantry).
