Leading into the first grand tournament of the season, the Greenwave boys and girls track and field teams placed in the top two of last weekend’s 84th annual Yerington Relays.

“That’s the most points we’ve scored in a long time,” Fallon girls coach Paul Orong said. “Our whole team came through and worked hard. They’ve been working really hard. They came together as a team on Saturday.”

The Lady Wave took first with 151 points, beating out Fernley by 44.5 points, while Dayton took fifth followed by South Tahoe and Sparks for the 3A teams. Fallon’s boys team fell 1.5 points shy of first as Fernley won with 118. Fallon, though, did finish higher than Sparks (116.5 vs. 112), Dayton (57.5) and South Tahoe (11) for the 3A teams.

“Great meet for the boys,” Fallon boys coach Steve Heck said. “A little disappointing to miss first place by just a point and a half, but overall a great day. We had a lot of personal bests and just some great efforts for an early season meet.”

Fallon hosts the Elks Invitational, the first large meet of the year, on Saturday at the Edward Arciniega Athletic Complex.

“The meet was a nice warm up to our big home invitational,” Heck said. “It had some nice competition and got the kids a taste of what bigger meets are like. This week’s meet will be packed with great competition and will be an exciting day.”

Senior Whitney Skabelund won two field events and placed in the top four in two track events to lead the Lady Wave.

Skabelund leaped 15 feet, 6 inches to take the long jump and 34-10 in the triple as Fallon placed four in the top five of the long jump and three of the top five in the triple.
