The Carson Valley Quilt Guild created a quilt for the first baby born at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center on March 18 to commemorate National Quilting Day.
On March 19, the guild presented a basket filled with a handmade quilt and other items such as burp pads and a diaper changing caddy.
Bow, a boy born at 7 pounds, 10 ounces and 20-inches-long, was the first baby and the recipient of the gift basket.
Karen Holbert and Paul Aguilera, the parents, were grateful for the handmade quilt and thoughtfulness of the gift basket.
“The warmth and love this quilt will provide will be with us for a long time,” said Holbert.
Although the Carson Valley Quilt Guild (with about 150 members) celebrated National Quilting Day in a variety of ways, including a traditional “bed turning” at the museum in Gardnerville, where quilters stack their quilts on top of each other “turning” them one by one to show off their handiwork and relate the story behind each one, the group also made time to share their skill with one of the communities newest members.
“Sharing our craft with the community is something quilters have done forever,” said Sue Jeffrey, Carson Valley Quilt Guild member. “Quilts are a gift of love that the recipient can actually wrap themselves up in. Celebrating this day helps others understand our craft and perhaps may even entice them to become involved themselves.”
