Enough is enough of biased media

Yes, I agree with Elizabeth Thompson who said in her letter published in the Nevada Appeal on March 11, “enough is enough,” but my opinion is 180 degrees different from hers.

President Trump denigrates the news media because they deserve his contempt, and many Americans share that disgust as the polls show.

Yes, a free press is a cornerstone of democracy but America deserves a press free of bias and hypocrisy. The Fourth Estate is terribly tarnished by its own doing.

Being a journalist was once an honored profession but not anymore. When journalists report news, rather than a narrative, they can redeem themselves; but until then, I hold the New York Times, ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, et al, with the same contempt as does President Trump and I say “enough is enough” of their lying and fake news.

Take to heart Casanova’s words about early U.S.

In France the memories of Giacomo Casanova (1725-1798) recently sold for a record $9 million. Among the some 4,000 pages was this item written in 1782.

“Simple democracy serves to generate turmoil and to fuel hatred among those who consider themselves best suited to fill the seat of power — they always target the wealthy.”

Referring to the fledgling United States.

North Carolina student needs help with project

Hello! I am a fourth grade student in North Carolina. In fourth grade, we do state reports and I have chosen your state! I am very excited to learn more about the great state of Nevada as I work on my report.

Most of the information that we get for our reports will be from books and websites. We also like to get information from people who live in the state, too. This is why I am writing to you. I was hoping that you would be willing to send me some items to help me learn more about the best things in your state. It could be things like postcards, maps, pictures, souvenirs, general information, this newspaper article, or any other items that would be useful.

New healthcare bill a detriment to Americans

Thanks to the Congressional Budget Office we now have a good idea of how the House’s new healthcare bill would affect American families.

In just two years 14 million would lose healthcare coverage, most affected would be those who gained it due to the recent Medicaid expansion — those who need it the most. Taken out to 10 years that number jumps to 24 million, unacceptable.

Those supporting this new bill say they do so because Americans have been subject to rising healthcare costs. The same CBO report states costs would continue to rise under this new law for the next 2-3 years before dropping slightly.

In short, this is a law that won’t fix the stated problem and does it by wrenching healthcare away from those who need it the most.

Nevada has made larger gains than most states under the ACA, let’s not throw them away.

On Nevada becoming year-round Daylight Saving Time

This is an answer to the letter submitted by Timothy M. DeTurk that appeared in the March 19 issue of the Nevada Appeal.

I don’t know if Mr. DeTurk was being facetious or really wanted Nevada to be year-round Daylight Saving Time. Or maybe he just doesn’t understand what that means.

As far as I know, no states do or plan to have year-round Daylight Saving Time. Arizona did not “retain” Daylight Saving Time, it rejected Daylight Saving Time altogether and stays on Standard Time year-round.

If Mr. DeTurk wants Nevada to stay on the same time year-round, I hope he really wants it to be Pacific Standard Time.
