Lady Wave sinks Wolverines

It was a weekend dreams are made of.

The Lady Wave softball team remains undefeated after dominating three games against the Truckee Lady Wolverines.

Fallon now stands 7-4 overall and 6-0 in league.

The first game of Saturday’s doubleheader ended 17-0 in five innings. Fallon Pitcher Hannah Hitchcock was a powerhouse on the mound, allowing only two base hits. The Wave consistently scored runs, only going without in the fourth inning.

In her four at-bats, Fallon’s Faith Cornmesser hit the team’s only home run and made six RBI; Lizzy Williams and Jorden Byers had two RBI each with Williams scoring one run and Byers matching Cornmesser with three runs.

Saturday’s second game ended 11-0. The Wolverines came back prepared and pressed their defense; the Wave brought offensive surges in the first and third innings, but Truckee held them to one run in all the others. Cornmesser’s pitches were on fire and she shot three up and three down each inning.

Rylee Buckmaster led the Wave with three runs and Cornmesser was behind with two runs and two RBI. Shelbi Schultz also scored two and had one RBI.

Fallon coach Tammie Shemenski said this was their first perfect game — meaning Truckee had no hits or runs and no errors.

“It was a perfect game, so that was really exciting for all of us,” she said. “Everybody had a hand in it, from our pitchers to our outfielders to infield plays. I don’t look at it as a pitcher’s perfect game, even though it’s awarded to the pitcher; that was our team’s perfect game.”

Friday’s match ended 16-0 in three innings. Fallon dominated the field, running in batters each inning. Cornmesser and Schultz led the team with three runs and two RBI each; Stacy Kalt, Hitchcock, Byers and Caitlyn Welch each had two runs.

Shemenski said it was a great weekend for the program as a whole. She said doubleheaders can be their strongest games since the players get to hit the field right away and use what they learned in the first game.

“They’re pumped up and ready to go,” she said.

Yesterday the Lady Wave played at home against Fernley, though results were not available at press time.

This weekend they travel to Spring Creek; they play at 3 p.m. Friday, then Saturday’s doubleheader games are at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
