150 years Ago

Prison fire details: At about 9 o’clock, Tom Haines, one of the guards, discovered a fire inside the kitchen fence and contiguous to a large pile of stove wood. He immediately gave the alarm. Mr. Deputy Warden Mason dispatched Mose, an African-American man employed at the Warm Springs Hotel, on Lance Nightingill’s horse, Blue Dick, to town to inform Lieutenant Governor Slingerland who was in company with his wife at the theater. Blue Dick made the best time ever accomplished between the Spring and Smith’s stable. He is credited for saving parts of the prison and buildings adjacent from destruction. We hope something handsome may be done for Mose.

Tragedy near Dayton: Young Joseph Quicili and a companion were attempting to cross the Carson River with a wagon and four animals near Dayton. The bridge had been swept away. Midway in the stream the current overturned the wagon. A number of Dayton citizens rushed to the scene and found the wagon, but no trace of young Quicili.

Advertisement: Edison’s latest super-feature, “The Law of the North,” will be shown at the Grand. Shirley Mason, 17 and charming, hailed as filmdom’s newest, brightest star will be appearing (Kleine-Edison-Selig-Essanay service).

Elvis Presley: At age 32, Elvis Presley married 22-year-old Priscilla Ann Beaulieu, an Air Force officer’s daughter. They were married in a posh Las Vegas hotel. She now wears a quarter-sized diamond on her finger.
