DAYTON — Bebop Martinez shot a season-best 7-over-par 79 to lead Carson High to a third-place finish at the final regular-season tournament at Dayton Valley Golf Club on Tuesday afternoon.
Galena, led by medalist Jay Babu’s 67, won the event with a 359. Manogue was second at 388 and Carson was next with a 443. Damonte was fourth with a 476.
“We had a decent round at Dayton,” coach Wade Greenlee said. “We finished third in league which is where we should be realistically. Bebop, Zander (Smokey) and Ethan (Lepire) shot their best rounds of the year and that’s important going into regionals.”
The regionals are set for Monday and Tuesday at Dayton. The top two teams and the top five individuals not on advancing teams qualify for state. Greenlee said he plans to have the team play Dayton in the coming days and work on some course management.
Lakoda Smokey had an 85, Zander Smokey shot 90, Lepire 92, Taylor Saarem 97 and Ty Evans 101.
“Lakoda made a few bad decisions and it cost him,” Greenlee said. “He will need to play more conservatively on Monday to stay in contention.
“Bebop and Lakoda have a chance if they can post scores in the high 70s or low 80s. There are 12 golfers with scoring averages between 79 and 86. Weather could play a factor and could play a big role in who goes and who stays home.”
