Darrell Moody: Glover a good fit for CHS boys hoops

I like the hiring of 24-year-old Jordan Glover as Carson High’s new basketball coach.

Yes he’s young, but I think that will work to his advantage. I think he will bring plenty of energy to the program, and he already realizes you have to build a program from the ground up which means establishing a local basketball academy. And, he’s extremely well spoken for somebody his age. He isn’t a walking cliché like some coaches I’ve dealt with over my 12-year career at the Appeal.

Having a dad as a professional and college coach gives him a good background in the sport. Even though he played just two years at Reno High, he has the experience needed.

And, his dad, Jason, was one proud father when I talked with him on the phone Wednesday night. The elder Glover was recently hired at USC as associate head coach of the women’s program.

“I’m really happy for him,” the elder Glover said from Los Angeles. “To get this opportunity at his age is awesome.

“He prepared (for the interview) for the last month. I gave him some of my thoughts and information, and he had a lot of his own ideas and thoughts. I think the program is in good hands.”

The elder Glover’s career took another turn, this one for the better. After coaching at two lower-Division I schools, he’s at USC. The Pac-12 is one of the most respected conferences in the country. Glover was offered the USC position when his head coach at New Mexico State Mark Trakh was hired at USC.

“I had no idea he was looking (for a new job),” Jason Glover said. “He hadn’t told any of us (assistants).”

The University of Nevada athletics department had three of its sports program receive awards as part of the NCAA Division I Academic Performance Program. The APR program is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all NCAA programs.

The Pack’s volleyball, cross country and women’s golf teams each scored a perfect 1,000 in the multiyear rate and the single-year data for the 2015-16 academic years, and were in the top 10 percent of all of the teams in their respective sports to earn the Public Recognition Awards.

The volleyball program has been honored three straight seasons, and this is the first time for women’s golf and cross country.

Congratulations to those teams, and hopefully we’ll see the basketball programs, baseball and softball on those lists one of these days.

It will be interesting to see how much longer Colin Kaepernick is unemployed.

I believe if Kaepernick would be willing to start the season as a backup, he would have been signed already. He has some flaws in his game, and the sooner he gets rid of those, the sooner he might be wearing an NFL uniform. One of the things that stands out to me is defense recognition. He took a lot of delay of games while with the 49ers.

I’d like to see him swallow his pride and keep playing the game. That being said, he needs to land with a team that will play to his strengths.

Most of the experts at ESPN, feel he will be unemployed until a starter goes down with an injury. Ditto for Jay Cutler.

Personally, I’d love to see the Raiders sign Kaepernick as a backup to Derek Carr. Kap is better than anybody else the Raiders could throw out there in a backup roll.

The Raiders need experience behind Carr. They need somebody who can win them a few games. Connor Cook can’t, as evidenced by his showing in the Raiders’ first-round playoff loss.
