150 Years Ago

Strawberries: Abrahams of the Corner Ice Cream Stand was so generous as to present us with two plates of luscious strawberries. May the Lord make him rich and keep him honest.

Wintering horses: The writer turned an old 28-year-old sway-backed mare out to forage in the hills. It came back all right, and with a fine growth of wool on its back. The wool was curried off and saved to stuff a mattress. The old plug was hitched up to a wagon and within five seconds had kicked the dashboard and thills up on top of the barn, carried the running gear to the North Carson dump and hasn’t been seen since. The wagon went to pieces because it was made in California. A Nevada raised wagon would have stood the trip.

Minden: The terminal of the V&T Railroad is a growing village. The recent flour mill is erected by Dangberg Land & Cattle Company and ready to receive grains. The Meyers Mercantile Company is building a new warehouse and will have flour from the best patterned mill in western Nevada.

100 Years Ago

World War I Soldiers: 700 soldiers on a special train of 14 cars passed through Winnemucca. They are on their way to San Francisco to receive their commands (Silver State).

Circus train wrecked: The Sells-Floto circus train was wrecked near Tonopah, three cars being smashed. Three horses were killed.

70 Years Ago

Polio: The Ormsby County chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis has distributed a pamphlet about the disease to every school child. It lists polio precautions during the epidemic season.

20 Years Ago

Advertisement: “The Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company presents, ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ at Carson City Community Center, $10 general, $9 students, $8 youth, $35 family.”
