SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — Dayton High’s dream of making the 3A state tournament in Las Vegas was dashed by Fallon on Friday at Todd Field at South Tahoe Middle School.

Fallon held Dayton’s high-powered offense to just two hits in a 9-1 win. Fallon had beaten the Dust Devils twice during the regular season. Fallon plays Elko this morning, and the winner plays undefeated Spring Creek for the title at noon. Spring Creek has already qualified for state.

“We ran into a buzzsaw,” Dayton coach Mike Burrows said. “Obviously we are disappointed that we’re eliminated, but I couldn’t be more proud of this team, especially our seniors. Those kids helped put Dayton baseball back on the map and we can’t thank them enough for their commitment the last four years. We’ll be back next year. The program is on its way.”

Nick Hein doubled for the Dust Devils and Trevor Burrows singled.

Dayton had stayed alive earlier in the day with a 6-5 win over Fernley.

Zach Woitas singled home the game-winning run in the seventh after the Dust Devils blew a 5-1 lead, giving up four in the top of the seventh to the Vaqueros.

Jesse Schmidt singled to start the seventh and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Baker. Justin Schmidt walked and Jesse Schmidt reached third on Nick Hein’s flyball to right. Woitas followed with his walk-off single.

Starting pitcher Trevor Burrows threw 6.1 innings of solid baseball, and he also had a big day at the plate with a single, triple and homer. Jesse Schmidt finished with two hits. Justin Schmidt, Hein, Woitas and Jake Madson all had a hit apiece. Isaac Von Schoff was credited with the win despite allowing two runs and three hits in two-thirds of an inning.
