Women escape vehicle that went into river

Carson City first responders executed a recovery Friday morning after a vehicle went into the Carson River.

Deputies responded to a call of two women who had driven their vehicle off the road into the river about 1:30 a.m. Friday, said Sheriff Ken Furlong. The women were off-roading deep in Brunswick Canyon when they lost control of the vehicle and drove into the river. Carson Fire Department and Search and Rescue both responded to assist.

The women managed to escaped the vehicle before responders arrived and sustained minor injuries. Search and Rescue helped extract the vehicle from the river later that morning.

Search and Rescue commander Dave Spencer said it took crews nearly an hour and a half to extract the vehicle. The Fire Department used their Swift Water Rescue Team to knock out the front passenger window of the vehicle to wrap a chain around. Crews then used tow trucks to pull the vehicle out of the water.

Furlong said that this isn’t a strange event to see at this time of the year.

“People are doing off-road activities constantly and with the summer warming up, people are out doing their thing,” Furlong said.

The sheriff and officials with Parks and Recreation and Open Spaces are scheduled to meet next week to discuss making the gate at the entrance of Brunswick Canyon operational. This would close the gate from dusk to dawn nightly.
