Senator Square: Carson High School class of 2017 getting ready for graduation

It’s that time of year again, time for the Carson High School Class of 2017 to graduate and move on toward other exciting endeavors. Many graduates will continue their education by heading up to the next level, going off to college, while some will attend a trade school, and yet others will simply begin employment in a field of their choice. For anyone in Carson City who desires to attend this amazing event, it happens June 3, and the ceremony begins at 9 a.m. on the CHS football field. One last photo opportunity will take place the morning of graduation. This is a photo of everyone gathered together wearing caps and gowns. The 2017 class photo will be taken in the CHS big gym, so all seniors must arrive at school and meet in the gym by 7:45 a.m. Family, friends, and guests should be aware parking and seating is limited, so arrive early. Handicap seating and parking is also available (best seats in the house).

LINK CREW PRAISES FRESHMAN

Last week, Link Crew provided CHS teachers with an opportunity to praise a freshman student for doing something amazing. Maybe the student made a turnaround or is just an awesome person, kind in every way. Maybe the student is the quiet kid who works hard and seems to fly under the radar. Well, Link Crew is choosing to recognize them. This time of year is a struggle for everyone, and Link Crew is coming to the rescue to deliver a small prize to these students.

SENIOR SUNSET

The Senior Sunset took place May 25 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on the front lawn of CHS with a free barbecue; moreover, the Senior Superlatives were announced, and the turnout was fantastic, exciting, and tearful all at the same time.

INDOOR SOCCER

With school winding down, Leadership wanted to have a fun event to help end the year on a high note, so CHS has been holding an indoor soccer tournament in both the CHS big and small gyms May 22-26 at lunch. Players, six people per team, with at least two girls on each team, gathered together to have fun and play some soccer with friends. The excitement was intense as the school year comes to a fantastic close.

SAFE GRAD

CHS Safe Grad night and next-day trip are fast approaching, and the organizers are reaching out to parents of CHS students to volunteer. The Safe Grad program has been a tradition in Carson City for 29 years and provides the graduating senior class with a safe, fun, and sober celebration on graduation night. The CHS Safe Grad Committee, Carson City Sheriff’s Office, Nevada Office of Traffic Safety, and local businesses and residents help sponsor the event. Safe Grad happens June 3-4 at the Carson City Community Center. Forty volunteers are still needed. This event couldn’t take place without our generous volunteers who make it happen, so please help. Email jslocum@gncu.net as soon as possible with name and phone number. Safe Grad shifts are as follows: June 3 and 4 from 9:45 p.m. to 1:45 a.m., June 4 from midnight to 3 a.m., and June 4 from 3 to 6 a.m. Volunteers will help with bag check, food, games and activities, door monitoring, raffles, setup, and cleanup.

THE YEARBOOK IS HERE

Parents, guardians, and students, the 2017 Carneta yearbook is finished, and a few copies are still available for $85. It’s time to offer congratulations to students, especially the ones whose parents and guardians want to leave a beautiful and timeless memory for them to access in the future. The number of former CHS students who return looking for a copy of their yearbook, the one they never purchased, is shocking. Stop by before school, at lunch, or after school to room 136, or contact Mrs. Patt Quinn-Davis, 775-283-1782, or email her, pquinn-davis@carson.k12.nv.us. The time is now; it’s not likely to come again, well, until next year.

MINI JOB FAIR

The CHS main office has been inundated with phone calls from business, more two dozen of them, looking for potential employees, so the Carson City School District administrators decided to hold a mini job fair May 26 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Employers showed up to Senator Square ready to hire CHS students and its graduates. Those students who are serious wore appropriate dress and had a resume ready. There were also some colleges in attendance including the new Sierra Academy of Style. Some of the employers who attended include: Panasonic, Hamilton, Reno Toyota, Carson City Sheriff’s Office, American Buildings, Clickbond, WACA, Apprenticeships, all military branches, Governor’s Office of Economic Development, City of Carson, and Carson City School District Operations. Colleges in attendance were UNR, TMCC, WNC, and Sierra Academy of Style. Though this event has already taken place, it’s by no means complete, so please call Career and Technical Education Administrator Michele Lewis for information at 775-283-1637.

FREE TO JUNIORS NEXT SCHOOL YEAR

Attention current junior class. Interested in a career as an automotive mechanic or collision repair specialist? Next school year, seniors may take classes at WNC to become certified in these industries. Students who earn these credentials may get jobs starting at $15 per hour or even more. This program is totally free and incorporated into the school day. Want to sign up or get more information? Come to room 163.

Seniors, please stop by the CHS guidance office, and let them know where and to what college eighth-semester transcripts should be sent.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

CHS Athletes of the Week are Abel Carter for baseball, Ashley Britt and Anya Woodbury for track, and Reece Canfield for swim.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK

The Student of the Week is Hunter Ketcham. He’s an awesome student and an exceptional person. Hunter goes out of his way to help both teachers and peers by cleaning up messes he didn’t make. Hunter helps his peers through difficult times and asks if there’s anything he can do to help teachers too. He’s always kind, respectful, and a model for other students at CHS. Congratulations, Hunter on being Student of the Week!
