Three teams dominated most of the first and second teams of the Northern 3A volleyball awards this season with Lowry High School earning recognition for Brandon Eastman as Coach of the Year and Jayden Eastman as Most Valuable Player.
Fallon placed five on honorable mention to include Karlee Hitchcock (outside hitter), Lorynn Fagg (defensive specialist), Journey Martin (libero), Shelby Shultz (setter), and Macie Anderson (outside hitter).
Fernley outside hitter Raye Arroyo was selected to first team, while teammate Katelyn Garnett, another outside hitter, made second team. The Vaqueros placed three on honorable mention: Katelyn Bunyard (libero), Malori Campbell (setter), and Brittney Gaitain (middle hitter).
Eastman led Lowry to a three-tie for first place in the Northern 3A with Fernley and Truckee, and the Lady Bucks captured the regional tournament held in Fallon in five sets over Truckee, the defending state champion. Lowry, though, lost in the first round at the 3A state tournament in Las Vegas.
“Brandon has a solid program,” said Lady Wave coach Patty Daum. ”He did an outstanding job.”
Eastman guided Lowry to a 21-11 overall record and 12-4 in league. Three teams were tied for second with 10-6 records. Daum, whose team missed the playoffs, said the league was very balanced this year from top to bottom.
“It was fun,” Daum said of the season. “Whoever showed up to play would win.”
Those named to first team are McKenna Brewer (middle blocker), South Lake Tahoe; Brittany Jacaway (middle blocker), Lowry; Madison Bromley (outside hitter) and Ryleigh Hogland (right side), Truckee; Elena Howe (opposite/setter), Elko; and Brianda Diaz (utility), Dayton.
Daum said she pushed for Anderson to be included on second team and thought Schultz played a solid season as a setter. Anderson had 81 kills, 57 serving points that included 26 aces and 86 blocks. Schultz recorded 274 assists as a setter, 24 kills and 45 blocks. She also had 57 service points.
Fagg, a junior, was steady from the service line with 57 points, 47 for aces, and she also had 90 digs. Hitchcock had 86 kills, 112 blocks and 57 serving points. Martin had 58 points including 23 aces and 124 digs.
Anderson is the only senior among Fallon’s postseason honorees.
