WNC News & Notes: Western Nevada College nurses embrace giving spirit

Your abandoned shoes just might help a nurse travel to Nashville, Tenn., and help someone become an entrepreneur in a poor country.

Nursing students at Western Nevada College are participating in a shoe drive through the end of November to help send its National Student Nurses Association committee to the national convention in April.

Donations of new and gently used shoes are being accepted through Tuesday at WNC, 2201 W. College Parkway in Carson City.

Drop-off areas are Cedar Building 231, Reynolds Center 103 and Cedar Building 100.

Shoe donations can also be picked up on WNC’s Fallon and Douglas campuses.

WNC’s NSNA club is participating in the shoe drive in partnership with Angel Bins, which has generated more than $1.8 million for schools, teams, adoptions and charities since 2012.

The shoes will be exported to various countries, creating thousands of jobs for micro-entrepreneurs who resell them as a means of supporting their families and becoming more self-sufficient.

Attend Financial Aid Meeting to Remain Eligible for Promise Scholarship

Western Nevada College is committed to helping more than 700 high school students remain eligible for the Nevada Promise Scholarship.

WNC is hosting numerous financial aid meetings to ensure Nevada Promise applicants maintain their scholarship eligibility. Remaining sessions for November will be offered in Cedar Building Room 331C (enter 331 to access 331C) on the Carson campus:

Tuesday, 3:30 p.m.

Wednesday, 5:30 p.m.

Parent attendance is recommended, and assistance with FAFSA completion will be provided if parents and students bring their 2017 tax documents.

Students who haven’t attended a financial aid meeting at their high school are required to partake in one no later than Dec. 30.

Ideal Time to Apply for Foundation Scholarships

Take advantage of your holiday idle time by filling out an application to become eligible for the more than 250 scholarships available through the WNC Foundation.

The 2018-19 scholarship application is online at www.wnc.edu/scholarships/ and must be completed by March 19.

Register Early for Spring Semester; Pay Later

With students not needing to make a payment until Jan. 5 there’s no need to delay registering for spring semester at WNC.

Students will want to register as early as possible to get the classes and schedule they want. Visit www.wnc.edu/class-schedule/ to get started.

The spring semester begins Jan. 22.
