Fallon boys soccer host North Tahoe Wednesday

The Greenwave boys’ soccer team lost 6-0 last Wednesday against Fernley.

Though it was a loss, Fallon Coach Nate Toigo said there was improvement after a tournament in Lowry.

“I definitely saw some improvements Wednesday,” Toigo said.

The Greenwave also went 1-4 during the preseason tournament at Lowry.

On Aug. 25, Fallon lost 6-1 to Fernley and 13-0 to Lowry.

On Aug. 26, however, the Greenwave picked up a 4-2 win against Battle Mountain. The second game of the day, though, was a 7-0 loss to Lowry.

Toigo said the win was great since it was their first one in more than a year. The coach noted that the teams Fallon faced were all full of older players with more experience than the Greenwave.

Toigo has been encouraging his players not to let the losses get them down.

“Losing is a part of life and they have to learn to accept when it happens and persevere,” he said. “All we can do is go day by day and improve the best we can.”

Toigo praised Kevin Duenas for his strong defense and team captain Brian Ugalde for his play. The coach also noted goalie Cesar Molina was playing well, both in the goal and when they brought him out to play in offense.

First-time player Kevin Maya was also praised for how fast he’s picking up the game.

“He has never played organized soccer before this year and he is like a sponge for soccer knowledge,” the coach said.

Fallon has two games this week. On Tuesday, the Greenwave traveled to Dayton — results of the match were not available at press time. The Greenwave also plays North Tahoe at home tonight at 5 p.m.

Toigo does not know much about North Tahoe, but he noted how much the lake communities love soccer; he said he expects it to be a good match against a strong team.
