Prep Roundup: Carson High baseball beats Hug

Carson High baseball coach Bryan Manoukian gave most of his reserves a chance to play significant innings Thursday night against Hug.

The only starters who were in the lineup at first pitch were Delsin Roberts, Kobe Morgan and Joe Tonino.

It didn’t matter. CHS still manhandled Hug, 13-3, in 4-plus innings at Ron McNutt Field to even its Northern 4A record at 4-4.

The win gave Carson a season sweep of the Hawks. On Tuesday, Carson pounded Hug, 19-1, in three innings.

“We put the bat on the ball and scored enough runs to win,” said Manoukian, whose team is scheduled to host North Valleys on Saturday at 10 a.m. “We’re 7-3 in our last 10 games, and now we get a day off. We still need to play better defense.”

Hug threatened in the first, loading the bases with one out, but Zach Glanzmann induced Fernando Martinez to hit into an inning-ending double play.

Carson took a 3-0 lead in the first on singles by Josh Buchan, Tonino and Vernon Painter plus two walks and an error.

The Senators extended their lead to 7-0 with four in the second.

Buchan and Tonino singled to open the inning. After Roberts singled to load the bases, Painter hit a two-run single to make it 5-0. Roberts stopped at third and Painter went to second on an error in right field. Pitcher Ben Nelson, serving as the designated hitter, hammered a ball to deep left, scoring Roberts and Painter to make it 7-0. Nelson reached third, but was called out for missing first base.

Hug scored on a double steal in the third to make it 7-1, but Carson countered with two more runs in the third to make it 9-1. After Hug trimmed the lead to 9-3 in the top of the fifth, Carson scored four in the bottom of the inning to end the game on the 10-run rule. Josh Ingram had the walk-off hit.

Tonino went 3-for-3 and scored three runs. Buchan, Painter and Nelson all had two hits. Seven of the nine Carson hitters had at least one hit.

CHS girls blank North Valleys

RENO — The Senators scored eight runs in the first four innings en route to a 10-0 win over North Valleys in a Northern 4A game Thursday afternoon.

Jailene Salciedo threw two shutout innings to start the game, and Taylor Murphy threw the final four innings. The duo combined to limit the Panthers to six hits, one off Salciedo and five off Murphy.

Kedre Luschar walked in the first, moved to third on an error and scored when Cam Quilling was thrown out on a dropped third strike.

Carson scored four in the second to extend its lead to 5-0.

Amaya Mendeguia and Kassidy Cooley singled to start the inning. After a strikeout, Nicole Brown singled to load the bases. Kailee Luschar singled home Mendeguia, and Cooley and Brown also scored on an error. Luschar scored on a single by Salciedo.

That was more than enough, but the Senators went on to score two in the third, one in the fourth and two in the sixth before the game was stopped because of the 10-run rule.

Brown, Cooley and Salciedo each finished with two hits.

Carson teams third, fifth in frosh-soph meet

The Carson High girls freshman-sophomore team took third and the boys were fifth at Wednesday’s Great Sierra Invite at Carson High School.

Galena won the boys meet with 41 points followed by Douglas at 33.82, Manogue at 33, Damonte 22 and Carson 21. Douglas dominated the girls event with 76 followed by Galena with 30, Carson 22.5, McQueen 17 and Manogue 15.

Annika Wick led the CHS girls with a second in the 400 (63.69), a third in the 100 (13.71) and a third in the 200 (27.89). Hannah Kaiser won the 800 in 2:37.17 and Erin Cartier was second in 2:37.58. Kaiser was fourth in the 400 (66.21).

Taryn Encinas was second in the high jump at 4-6. Encinas had the same height as Damonte’s Leah Dixon, but had more misses. Annelise Poor was fifth in the 300 hurdles (56.50) and sixth in the 100 hurdles (20.49). The Senators’ 400 relay quartet of Alyssa Lucas, Encinas, Hailey Coe and Chloe Wait was third at 56.19. Lucas was fourth in the triple jump at 28 feet.

On the boys side, Parker Lehmann was the only individual event winner for CHS, taking the 1600 in 4:58.88. He was also sixth in the 800 at 2:16.70. Jakob Heller was second in the 300 hurdles (44.64) and fifth in the 110 hurdles (18.62). Diego Lopez was second in the triple jump at 37-11, nine inches better than Heller, and sixth in the long jump (17-2 1/2). Damon Jennings was fifth in the triple jump at 36-10 1/2 and sixth in the long jump (17-2 1/2).

Distance specialist Zach Sever was second to Lehmann in the 1600 with a 4:59.86 and fifth in the 800 at 2:15.30. Dominic Martinez was second in the 400 (56.13) and Chance Hannah was sixth in 59.72.

Carson was fourth in the 400 relay in 47.73 thanks to Gilbert Vasquez, Tyler Crisp, Jeremy Heaton and Misrael Becerra. Carson was fifth in the 800 and 1600 relay events.
