Prep Roundup: Carson High softball sweeps Galena

RENO — Carson High’s softball team continued its winning ways, sweeping a doubleheader against Galena, 14-3 and 13-2, on Friday.

Carson won the opener in six innings and the nightcap in five.

The sweep gave Carson a 6-4 record in Northern 4A play heading into Thursday’s showdown at Reed. The Raiders dealt Carson a tough 3-1 loss earlier this season.

The Senators had 28 hits in the twin-bill, including a 6-for-8 effort by Kedre Luschar and a 6-for-9 day for Kassidy Cooley. Jailene Salciedo was a force in the circle, picking up both wins and going 5-for-7 at the plate.

Carson coach Carlos Mendeguia said his young team is starting to hit its stride, especially on the offensive end.

“We’re learning about each other,” Mendeguia said. “Whenever you have a coaching change, the kids have to get used to and do things how we want them done. They may have done things differently for other coaches. Those coaches aren’t wrong, but every coach has a certain way they want to do things. Our bats are really coming around.”

Indeed. Carson is hitting .379 as a team. Freshman second baseman Kedre Luschar leads the way at .571 with 14 RBI followed by junior pitcher Jailene Salciedo at .533 with 15 RBI. Sophomore shortstop Kailee Luschar is at .400 with seven RBI, Cooley is at .391 with 14 RBI, Lauren Lemburg is at .378 with nine RBI, senior utility player Nicole Brown is at .355 and sophomore Alex Salciedo is at .320. Seven of nine starters at .320 or better. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Cooley is 8 for her last 13 with seven RBI, and Mendeguia moved her to the cleanup spot in Friday’s second game.

“Kassidy has been hot,” Mendeguia said. “She has been hitting the ball hard. We’re going with the hot hand.”

In the opener, Cooley’s two-run double keyed a five-run inning that snapped a scoreless tie. Jailene and Alex Salciedo and Cam Quilling also drove in runs in the big inning.

The Senators struck for four more in the fourth to open a 9-0 lead which proved to be too much for Galena to overcome. Lemburg had a key two-run single to right field in the uprising.

Jailene Salciedo threw the first three innings, and then took the rest of the game off as Taylor Murphy finished.

In the second game, Carson led just 2-1 before exploding for 11 runs in the top of the fifth. Galena committed four errors in the inning, and each time a mistake was made, Carson made the Grizzlies pay.

Cooley had two hits in the inning as did Lemburg. Kailee and Kedre Luschar each reached on a hit and error.

Kedre Luschar and Cooley each had three hits. Jailene Salciedo and Lemburg had two hits each.

Salciedo was impressive in the circle, especially in the second game. She allowed four hits, fanned five and walked two. She allowed a run in the first and one in the fifth.

“She gets stronger as the game goes,” Mendeguia said. “We put Taylor in there to give Jailene a little break before the second game.”

Lowry dusts Dayton

WINNEMUCCA — Lowry scored in all four of its at-bats en route to a 14-2 mercy rule win over Dayton on Friday afternoon.

The series continues Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.

Dayton managed just two hits, homers by Julie Rogacs and Aleea Howe.

Lowry shut down Amanda Woitas, Marissa Hein and Tamia Powell, holding the trio to a combined 0-for-6.

The loss stretched Dayton’s losing streak to four.

BASEBALL

Dust Devils blanked

WINNEMUCCA — Lowry scored all of its runs in the first three innings en route to an easy 10-0, 5-inning win over Dayton on Friday afternoon.

The teams conclude the three-game series Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.

Jacob Marriott went all five innings for Lowry, striking out eight, walking four and allowing just two hits. Marriott also helped himself at the plate with a single, double and two RBI.

Jake Madson and Isaac Von Schoff each had a single for Dayton.

The 2 through 4 hitters in the lineup — Trevor Burrows, Zach Woitas and Justin Schmidt — were 0-for-6.

TRACK

Granados 26th in Oregon

EUGENE, Ore. — Junior Ben Granados was 26th in the 100-meter event at the prestigious Oregon Relays at historic Hayward Field on Friday afternoon.

Rheanna Jackson was 40th in the 3000, clocking an 11:03.35.

Abigail Pradere and Ashley Britt are schedule to compete Saturday.
