Wave swimmers see mixed results at Saturday meet

The Greenwave swimming team faced stiff competition from South Tahoe and Lowry on Saturday in Reno.

The Fallon boys fell short by a combined 18 points in both duals, losing to South Tahoe, 111-96, and Lowry, 103-100. The Lady Wave salvaged a win over Lowry, 97-88, but lost to South Tahoe, 119-83.

“Both schools were very competitive,” Fallon coach Ken Grimes said. “We had some very good races but couldn’t quite finish it up at the end. We have to get back in the pool this week, make some adjustments and be ready to take them on again at the regional meet.”

With the regional meet in three weeks, Grimes said Fallon’s sitting in good shape with qualifying times.

Each swimmer can only compete in four events, including two individual, in the regional meet. Each school is allowed only one relay entry for each relay event at the regional meet.

Ruben Alanis and Christian Nemeth have qualified in five individual events while Emily Giovanetti and Larissa Sanches are eligible in four. Several swimmers have qualified between two and three events.

“Having as many options as possible allows us to better strategize where to try and place swimmers and see if we can get them to the state meet,” Grimes said.

Ashby Trotter and Sanches each scored a pair of wins to lead the Lady Wave on Saturday.

Trotter won the 50-meter freestyle in 31.13 seconds and the 100 breaststroke in 1:27.04 against Lowry. Sanches won the 200 free in 2:35.92 and 500 free in 7:00.66 against both teams. Whitney Bernard won the 100 free against Lowry in 1:14.36, and Cara White finished second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:55.35.

The relay team of Sanches, Trotter, Bernard and Karley Frederick won the 200 medley relay in 2:29.47, and the team of Bernard, Trotter, Frederick and Marlen Hansen won the 200 relay in 2:15.80. White, Hannen, Sanches and Alexi Wassmuth finished second in the 400 relay.

Nemeth won two events and Alanis and Donnovan Wright each won one.

Nemeth won the 50 freestyle in 24.68 and 100 fly in 1:03.27. Alanis won the 200 individual medley in 2:30.37 against both Lowry and South Tahoe, Wright won the 100 free in 1:00.39 against Lowry.

The relay team of Nemeth, Wright, Alanis and Kaden Grimes won the 200 medley relay against both Lowry and South Tahoe in 2:02.81, and the team of Nemeth, Alanis, Wright and Justin Bivens won the 200 relay against both teams in 1:44.94. Kaweepat Hoonsiri finished second in the 200 free against Lowry in 2:39.68, Bivens was third in the 50 free in 29.33 and third in the 100 free in 1:09.62 followed by Hoonsiri in fourth in 1:09.92. Grimes finished second in the 100 backstroke in 1:26.92 and Alanis was third in the 100 breaststroke in 1:12.92. Alanis’ time in the breaststroke, though, was the best against South Tahoe. Bivens, Hoonsiri, Grimes and Morgan McAlexander finished second against both teams in the 400 relay in 4:55.75.
