Cactus Jack’s chips found during Carson City sidewalk demolition

Carson City streets may not be paved with gold, but some of its sidewalks are lined with casino chips.

Cactus Jack’s Casino chips were found in sidewalks near the casino during demolition conducted for the ongoing Downtown Curry Streetscape Project, Dan Stucky, city engineer told the Regional Transportation Commission on Wednesday.

“So you know you’re in Nevada when you demo a sidewalk and find poker chips in the concrete,” said Stucky.

The $4 million project to replace water and sewer lines, widen sidewalks, and repave a portion of the downtown street is on track to finish Before Nevada Day despite some delays, Stucky said.

He said Q&D Construction ran into conduit half a dozen times that the contractor had to first determine was abandoned before moving forward on the water and sewer line replacement.

The RTC also approved an $80,000, two-year interlocal agreement with the University of Nevada for technical assistance on pavement.

The agreement will help Public Works develop two guides, a Surface Seal Design and Construction Guide and Asphalt Concrete Mix Type Selection Guide, to assist in hiring contractors, and also update its paver database.
