Prep Roundup: Carson High girls win; Galena sweeps Douglas

RENO — Carson High, led by Lily Bouza and Trinity Beard, knocked off Wooster, 54-24, in a Sierra League matchup Tuesday at Craig Congdon Gym.

Carson improved to 4-11 in league play entering Friday’s season finale at home against Douglas (5:15 p.m.). Wooster dropped to 0-15.

Bouza led the way with 19 points and Beard finished with a season-best 12.

“The first five minutes we played as a team,” Carson coach Melissa Larsen said. “The last quarter and a half we kept throwing the ball away. About midway through the third quarter we started playing basketball again. Trinity had a good game, especially on the boards.”

Carson lead 23-8 midway through the second quarter, but Wooster ended the half with a 9-0 run to trim its deficit to 23-17.

The second half was no contest, as the Senators outscored Wooster 31-7.

Wooster cut the lead to 25-20 midway through the third period, but CHS went on a 9-2 run to end the quarter and take a 34-22 lead. Bouza had seven of the points.

Wooster failed to score in the final six-plus minutes. Carson scored the final 18 points of the contest.

Beard had six in the final period and Abbey Paulson added two baskets.

Grizzlies roll past Douglas

MINDEN — Kristen Farrell scored 14 of her game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter to help Galena pull away to a 57-42 win at Douglas.

Galena (8-7 league, 12-11 overall) only trailed twice at Randy Green Court, both times in the first quarter, on its way to a win that created a second-place tie with Douglas (8-7 league, 12-14 overall) in the Sierra League race.

The Tigers need to win at Carson on Friday to have a chance at the No. 2 seed and a home game in the playoffs.

Madison Smalley scored 16 points, eight in the fourth quarter, to lead Douglas.

The difference was Galena’s 13-3 run through the second quarter. Madelyn Laid scored five points for the Grizzlies, including a 3-pointer that extended their lead to 15-8.

Douglas still only trailed 41-33 with 5:08 left to play, however, Farrell scored seven unanswered points to push the Grizzlies into a double digit advantage that could prove decisive in the tie-breaker criteria.

Sierra Lutheran wins

RENO — Sierra Lutheran beat Excel Christian, 24-13, at the Reno Events Center. Ruth Boogman had eight points and nine rebounds and Amanda Almeida added five points, six rebounds and five steals for the Falcons.

“It was fun to play at the Reno Events Center,” Sierra Lutheran coach Michael Nelson said. “It was a hard fought game and I got to play a lot of my younger players to give them some varsity game experience.”

Wolverine girls win

DAYTON — The Dust Devils went 6-for-36 from the field en route to a 44-18 loss to Truckee.

“We turned ball over on bad passes and Truckee capitalized,” Dayton coach Kelly Frantz said. “We couldn’t get anything going offensively (in the second half).”

Tamia Powell had 10 points and 11 rebounds. Cassie Dickenson grabbed seven rebounds.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Grizzlies pound Douglas

MINDEN — Moses Wood and Spencer Conatser combined to score 45 points to help lead Galena to a 72-53 Sierra League win against Douglas at Randy Green Court.

Wood had a double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds and Conatser added 22 as Galena (10-5 league, 15-8 overall) moved into sole possession of second-place.

The Grizzlies lead Damonte Ranch by one game in the standings in the race to host a first-round region tournament next Wednesday. Galena visits Damonte Ranch on Friday in a game that will determine that playoff seed.

Douglas (6-9 league, 8-16 overall) was tied at 16-all after one quarter and only trailed 36-29 at halftime.

The Grizzlies started to pull away in the third quarter when four players combined to knock down six shots from beyond the 3-point arc during a 22-point surge that pushed the lead to 58-40. Trae Thomson and Schuyler Louie each had a pair of 3-pointers in the period.

Ian Ozolins scored 13 points and Justin Lopez 12 to lead the Tigers in their Senior Night game.

Douglas is assured of the league’s No. 4 seed for the region tournament.

Falcons cruise

RENO — Kyman Berger scored 16 points and Zane Warkentin added 14 to lead Sierra Lutheran to a 65-48 win over Excel Christian at the Reno Event Center.

The Falcons cruised to a 28-7 lead after one quarter and were never headed.

“Good game tonight,” SLHS coach Ben Walther said. “The boys came out strong and really played good team ball in the first half. Good win.”

Logan Schinzing added 11 points and six rebounds, and Thomas Mellum added five points and five rebounds.

Dayton edges Truckee

DAYTON — Trevor Burrows scored 20 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the Dust Devils to a 55-42 win.

Lance Peterson also scored 20 points. He nailed four 3-pointers.

Dayton hosts Fernley on Friday at 7 p.m.

Carson rallies for win against Reed

Trailing 16-14 after two rounds, Carson High’s bowling squad rallied for a 25-20 win.

Carson hosts a playoff match Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Gold Dust West.

Gabe Gabica rolled a 211 and 573, Matt Hinton had a 193 and 539, Taylor Johnson had a 186 and 531, and Brandon Engles rolled a 192 and 528. Blake Perry had a PR of 215 and Oscar Olmo rolled his best-ever game, a 199.
