Bighorns win against Gabbs

The Oasis Academy boys’ basketball team won its second game of the season, 51-40, Wednesday when they traveled to Gabbs.

The Bighorns had a slow start in the first quarter trailing at the end of the first quater, 10-9. In the second, though, Oasis took the lead, going into halftime with a 22-18 lead.

Oasis extended its lead to 37-14 in the third quarter.

Gabbs mounted a rally in the fourth quarter but couldn’t catch up.

Douglas Lee led the Bighorns in scores with nine points, including one three-pointer. Brenden Norman-Leary was close behind with eight, along with Ryan Jones with seven. Kenyen Hicks, Jacob Alcoa and Armahn Brantly each scored six, Joel Mincer scored five, and Martin Barbot and Patrick Morrow scored two.

Oasis coach Donald Schank said he was pleased with the Bighorns’ offensive output. He said they had balanced scoring between everyone on the team — he attributed this to sharing the ball well and running a good offense.

“They found the open player, which was nice to watch,” he said.

There were some issues, though, and Schank said their defense struggled. He said they didn’t have good ball pressure, which gave Gabbs open shots and second shots on a rebound.

Oasis hosts Tonopah tonight for the last game of the season. Tip-off will be at 7 p.m. in the Venturacci Gym. Schank said winning against Gabbs was a good victory to go into the last game with. He recalled their first game against Tonopah was a good one, despite being a 61-32 loss.

“We played them well offensively, putting up over 60 shots,” Schank said. “We just have to shoot a better percentage.”

He said the key to the game would be focusing on stopping Tonopah’s baseline penetration and controlling their post players.
