The Greenwave boys basketball team secured second place in the league during the weekend, defeating Sparks and South Tahoe.
Saturday’s game against the Sparks Railroaders ended 81-42. The Greenwave dominated the court, taking a 21-9 lead in the first quarter.
The Fallon defense crushed the Railroaders in the second half, keeping them below 10 in both quarters. The third quarter ended 68-33.
Against South Tahoe, the Greenwave won 79-65. Once again Fallon shot out to an early lead in the first quarter, 23-7.
South Tahoe rallied in the second half, outscoring the Greenwave in the third quarter to cut the lead to 61-50. The final quarter was another close one with both teams scoring a similar number of points.
John Cooley led the Greenwave during the weekend, scoring 30 points with six three-pointers. Christian Nemeth was close behind with 27 points; Elijah Jackson added 26 points.
Thomas Steele scored 24 points and was a defensive leader with 12 rebounds, three assists and four steals. Nemeth was another strong defender with nine rebounds, two assists and five steals.
Fallon coach Chelle Dalager said everyone on the bench played during Friday’s game. She said the team passed the ball well. She also said the Wave were able to work on the things they needed to as they head into regionals.
Dalager praised the Greenwave’s intensity during Saturday’s game. She said the Wave is playing their best right now.
“It’s a great time for us to be playing our best basketball,” the coach said. “I’m really pleased.”
Dalager said she was excited they had to win both games. She said it was a great position for the team; she said the pressure and adversity before regionals let them get a feel for what was coming.
“I know that it’s a whole other environment and whole different league,” Dalager said. “I was glad for some of that same pressure to be put on us.”
The Greenwave now prepares for regionals in Elko. At second place they have a bye for Thursday’s games — their first game will be Friday against the winner of Thursday’s Spring Creek vs Dayton game.
