The Lady Wave basketball team closed out an undefeated league season over the weekend, defeating Sparks and South Tahoe.

Saturday’s South Tahoe game ended 66-35. The Wave put the game out of reach taking a 30-5 lead after the first quarter.

Going against Sparks Friday, Fallon came away 46-21.

Chandler McAlexander was the team’s leading scorer for the weekend with 24 points. Kaitlyn Hunter added 20 points, including one three-pointer. Leilani Otuafi also scored 20 while Madi Whitaker scored 18, Leta Otuafi 12 and Faith Cornmesser 10.

Fallon coach Anne Smith said McAlexander is one of a handful of players to come off the bench and be a high scorer. She added Hunter’s scores also were impressive. Hunter is known more for her defensive play than her offense.

“It was good to see the scoring a little different than it usually is,” Smith said. “When you get these other kids who aren’t used to throwing up those numbers, and then they get those numbers it’s always fun to see.”

The coach added they made all of their free throws against Sparks.

Smith noted everyone had playing time in both games. She said she was happy for this and added everyone did well. She said they stuck to the game plan and were able to work on things they had been emphasizing in practice.

“That’s always a good thing to see,” Smith said.

Fallon heads to regionals this week, standing as the first seed. The Lady Wave has a bye for Thursday’s game, not playing until Friday. Their first game will be against the winner of Thursday’s Elko vs Fernley match.

Smith said regionals can be tricky as a top seed since they don’t know who they’re playing. She said they have to prepare for both teams as much as possible.

“They’re excited,” Smith said of the team’s feelings about regionals. “I like that, when they say they’re excited, because it means they’re prepared.”
