Community Sports: Winners in senior men’s golf event named

The two-man teams of Dennis Justin and Kurt Cleek, and Nick Paul and Bob Pemberton tied for the top spot on the first day of at the 7th annual Carson City Senior Men’s Invitational played in Primm Jan. 13-14, and Dino Diciannno won the second day. In the seven-year history of the event, a team has never won both days.

Steve Aten won long drive on the first day of the tournament and Andrew Warner won on the second day.

Pemberton edged Mike Barry for closest to the hole.

Carson bowlers triumph

Carson scored 36 points versus a blind score at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno. Carson won its points by bowling within 10 pins of its average and within 30 pins of the three-man team.

Matt Hinton (236-627), Connor Bell (215-595), Chesney Minor (207-563), Taylor Johnson (228-559), Robbie Munoz (197-556), Brandon Engels (208-554) and Gabe Gabica (225-535) turned in the top performances.

Oscar Olm had a personal best of 180 and 459.

Silver State gymnasts win

The XCel Bronze team from Silver State Gymnastics won the team award at last weekend’s 37th annual Flips Invitational held in Reno.

In Junior A, Alyssa Matthies was first on vault, beam and floor en route to the all-around title. In Senior A, Kiera Windsor was second on bars, and third on vault and floor en route to the all-around title. Haylee Butler was first on floor and third on bars. In Senior B, Hayley Williams was second on bars, and first on beam, floor and all-around. Reagan Talkington was second on vault and floor, third on bars and second all-around. Adriana Castillo was first on vault, beam, floor and all-around in the C division.

In Level 4A senior, Danica Studley was third on bars and Brooklyn Gundy was second on beam. In Level 4B senior, Tabby Thompson was first on vault and floor, second on bars and was second all-around.

The Level 7 team won third place. Emily Lewis was second on bars and beam in the younger division. In the older Level 7 division, Eviana McGowan was second on bars and Eliana Hollar was second on vault.

CHS grad coaches one on nation’s top XC teams

A Colorado high school has made a name for itself on the national level due to the leadership of a Carson High graduate.

Rob Parish, a 1995 Carson High graduate, is the head coach of the Battle Mountain High School girls cross country team. The Battle Mountain girls cross country team took third at the Nike Cross Nationals on Saturday, Dec. 2, in Portland, Ore.

Battle Mountain’s finish was impressive considering it has a student body of just 940 and finished third among all the schools at the Nike event no matter the size. The Huskies finished one place ahead of Keller, Texas, which has a student body of 2,645. Battle Mountain competes in the 4A division in Colorado. Battle Mountain also beat Colorado 5A schools Mountain Vista and Broomfield as it had done before at the Nike event.

Under Parish, the Battle Mountain girls also repeated as 4A State champions and Parish was named as the 4A State Coach of the Year by Chsaanow.com, a website that covers high school sports in Colorado.

At the Nike event, Battle Mountain finished with 162 points behind Manlius, N.Y. (89) and North Naperville, Ill. (94). “I think it’s a tremendous accomplishment,” Parish said. “This didn’t happen overnight. I think all of the athletes who have been a part of the program share in this. It’s been generations of kids pushing each other to build on the successes and inspire the current generation. This is a celebration of cross-country in our community.”

Parish also serves as Battle Mountain High’s principal. During his tenure as cross country and track coach at Battle Mountain, Parish has won seven girls cross country regional titles, 19 regional titles in boys and girls cross country and track, five state titles and has coached one individual state champion.

EV spikers triumph

Eagle Valley’s eighth-grade volleyball team won the South Tahoe Optimist Volleyball Tournament over the weekend.

Eagle Valley beat Carson Valley, 26-24, 21-25, 15-7, in the championship match. In the semis, EV beat Fallon 25-15 and 25-9.

Eagle Valley beat Pau Wa Lu, 25-21 and 25-10, Carson Middle School 25-9 and 25-22, topped South Tahoe 25-21 and 25-15, and concluded pool play by defeating Carson Valley 25-11 and 25-20.

Ashli White had 12 aces, 23 kills, a dig and two blocks. Lilly Ralla had 19 aces, 13 kills and seven digs. Caydee Farnworth had 10 kills, nine digs and six aces. Olivia Smith added 11 aces, five kills, three digs and 87 assists. Shannen VonDuering finished with five aces, 29 kills, six digs and three blocks. Lizbeth Garcia had five digs, seven aces and two kills.
