Prep Roundup: Carson High wrestlers 3rd at Placer Duals

AUBURN, Calif. — Carson High’s wrestling team posted a 3-1 record to take third place at the Placer Duals on Saturday.

Carson beat Placer and Yuba, and then lost to Spanish Springs in the semifinals before beating Vacaville in the third-place match.

Carson was led by Kyle Rudy, who was undefeated at 138 pounds. Jesse Case (182), Luis Mayoral (113) and Alex Wells (152) all posted 3-1 records.

Ariel Vega (106), Johnny Perkins (126), Mark Trost (132), and Bryce Newhall (160) went 2-2. Brandon Macias (heavyweight) went 1-1. Ty Evans (195) and Gurjant Mand (220) went 1-2. Damien Branco (120) and Izayah Fando (145) both went 1-3.

Carson hosts the regionals Friday and Saturday.

Falcons rally for win

Sierra Lutheran outscored Virginia City 29-14 in the second half en route to a 52-43 victory Saturday in a Northern 1A game.

“I thought the boys played with a lot of resiliency tonight,” coach Ben Walther said. “Virginia City came out of the gates and played extremely well in the first half. We struggled to contain them on the offensive end, and they were able to force us into a lot of turnovers.

“Fortunately, during the third quarter, we were more under control and had a few key possessions that allowed us to get the lead back. From there, our defense really stepped up the rest of the way. Great win for the team tonight.”

Zane Warkentin led the Falcons with 17 points, seven rebounds and five steals, and Thomas Mellum added 12 points, four steals and four assists. Kyman Berger chipped in six points and seven rebounds.

Elko rolls past Dayton

ELKO — The Indians remained undefeated with a 66-34 victory over Dayton on Saturday.

Dayton dropped to 4-8 in league play.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Falcons outlast VC

Ruth Boogman scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Sierra Lutheran to a 29-23 win over Virginia City in a Northern 1A game Saturday.

Aleyna Gilson and Mikayla Talkington each added six points, and Gilson added six rebounds and eight steals. Talkington also pulled down nine rebounds.

The win was the 100th in school history.

“Very important win to keep our playoff hopes alive,” SLHS coach Michael Nelson said. “Both teams played hard and didn’t give up. We played great defense to secure the win.”
