PGA’s Barracuda Championship begins Thursday in Reno

The PGA Tour returns to Reno this weekend for its 20th year. The Barracuda Championship begins Thursday at Montreux Golf & Country Club. A $3.4 million purse will be awarded when the field takes aim during the Modified Stableford format tournament. The winner is scheduled to take home $612,000.

Local athletes shine in USA Special Olympics

Northern Nevada athletes had an excellent effort at the USA Special Olympics recently held in Seattle. Curt Allen, a 31-year-old swimmer from Gardnerville, won two gold medals for Team Nevada. Carson City’s Katie Fried, 28, also had an excellent meet in swimming, winning gold in freestyle and silver in individual medley.

For Krysta Palmer, it’s all about going for it. “I went for it,” said Palmer about taking on the world competition in diving this summer. The end result was winning her second straight medal at the World Cup, a fifth place finish in the World Cup in the 3-meter springboard and two more medals at two European Grand Prix events.
