Carson City teams split at Little League tourney

Carson City Little League opened with a win and loss at the first day of the District 1 All-Star Tournament at Governors Field on Wednesday.

The 10-year-old squad rolled to an 18-4 mercy-rule victory over South Tahoe, while the 12-year-old team managed just two hits in a 5-0 loss to Reno American.

The Carson 10s return to action Friday against Truckee, which got a first-round bye. The 12s, meanwhile, return to action Saturday. A second loss would eliminate Carson City from title contention.

The Carson-South Tahoe game was tied at 2 after one inning, but the locals scored five in the second, six in the third and five more in the fourth. The game was stopped on the 10-run rule after four innings.

A triple by Nick Heald keyed the big uprising in the second. Tyler Silsby and Ash Wilkin contributed singles in the inning.

South Tahoe made things easier by making two errors, walking three hitters and having a couple of run-scoring passed balls. Heald had a two-run double while Ethan Cook and Wilkin added run-scoring singles.

Ryker Russell’s two-run double keyed the fourth-inning outburst. Heald and Wilkin also added hits as Carson City took advantage of three walks, including one with the bases loaded.

Heald finished with a single, double and triple. Wilkin also contributed three hits.

Heald picked up the win on the mound and Noah Hutchinson finished up.

The 12-year-old team ran into Dylan Anderson, who struck out 10, allowed two hits and walked one batter in 4.2 innings of work. He left in favor of Carl Lagrone III, who retired all four batters he faced.

Anderson had a no-hitter until the fourth when Parker Maldonado singled to left and Keagen Ferris had an infield single. With runners at first and second, Anderson fanned pinch-hitter Noah Silverberg and Tallan Duran to end Carson City’s only threat of the game.

Reno scored all the runs it needed in the first when Anderson singled and moved to third on Brodi Dobbins’ double. Holden Rowan followed with a fly ball to the warning track in center, allowing both runners to score.

Reno added an unearned run in the third when Dobbins reached on an error and scored on Jack McDowell’s single.

Reno closed out the scoring with single runs in the fourth and fifth off reliever Isaac Felix.
