Carson City 11-year-olds fall at All-Star tourney

It was a rough day all the way around for the Carson City 11-year-old all-star team.

It started with some problems with paperwork for starting shortstop Jeremy Hernandez, and that delayed the game for approximately 30 minutes. The issue was eventually sorted out, and Hernandez entered the game in the top of the third inning.

Carson was already behind 6-0 by that time, as Centennial rolled to a 9-4 win in the first day of the 11-year-old District 1 tournament at Governor’s Field.

The loss puts Carson in a must-win situation Saturday at 11 a.m. The locals must win to keep their title hopes alive.

Centennial scored four in the first, using an error, a hit batsman, a walk and hits by Nico Leonard, Kaden Eaton, Brady Robinson and Zac Eaton. Leonard and Zac Eaton had RBIs.

Carson threatened in the second after Demarcus Brewster doubled to put runners on second and third with one out. Ethan Hendee walked to load the bases, but Nathan Freed grounded to first to end the threat.

Centennial extended its lead to 6-0 in the second as Michael Challacomb drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Carson also made two errors in the inning.

Carson got on the board in the top of the third when Tyler LaFollette reached on an infield single and advanced to second on Jesse Freeman’s single. LaFollette scored when Tavin Miller’s groundball was misplayed. Hernandez drove in the second run with an infield out.

Centennial used two walks and two wild pitches to score once in the bottom of the third, extending its lead to 7-2.

Kellen McCaffrey’s two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth made it 9-2.

Carson rallied for two in the top of the sixth on singles by Brewster and Christian Gabriel, a walk and an error.

The Carson 10s, 18-4 winners in the opening round, return to action Friday at 5 p.m. against Truckee.

The Carson 12s play Saturday at 4 p.m. against either Reno Continental or Carson Valley.
